My roommate trades on RB and has been an RS member since '09. He has stopped trading because he feels people are cutting him short on Bruery beers. He usually values the beers he's trading at what the shelf price is, but in trying to trade Fruet, he runs in to people wanting to do $4$ @ $25. He feels this is unfair because it doesnt take in to account the money he shelled out for the membership, and it compounds when trading multiple Bruery beers.

What do you all think of this? If you had to pay for a discount, would you value your beers at shelf or at discounted price?

I would think in the case of Fruet the true price would be $30, because they are selling it at $30 to anyone who isn't a RS member. For RS member only beers like Chocolate Rain this year the price is $34 not the advertised $40 because not one person bought it for $40.

If you buy a beer with a coupon, I wouldn't expect you to pass that savings to me.

I go off shelf price and would expect RS members to do the same. I'm not in the RS but I trustee and often pick up the beers for myself at Provisions at total cost.
I've noticed people bring this up before and honestly I don't really see why people make a deal of it either way. The discount saves a decent amount for the members but then after tax/crv it only comes down to a few dollars.
RS members could make the argument of having to deal with a trustee and shipping costs as well but they don't.

To me the best way to avoid discrepancies either way is to just call it the shelf price all around.

I value them at the non-discounted price, because I take the fact that I paid for the right to that discount into account. That said, I think I traded some of them away for beers that cost a few bucks less than the discounted price, and some of them away for beers that cost a few bucks more for the discounted price.

I guess my point is that for most of the beers, it's a difference of maybe $1-3, which IMO is not significant and usually covered with extras anyway.

He's usually trading 3-5 Bruery beers at a time, so the difference can come up to as much as $15, hence his concern.

This is a great way to hear it explained, thanks.

If someone else wants a discount on RS beers, they should join the RS next year.

I am of the mind that I paid the entry fee to earn the 15% discount. If I trade an RS exclusive (meaning never hit shelves), I would value the beer at the price before discount.

I'm not adding in the shipping costs (which are significant!), but neither am I reducing the value because I get a discount.

You should not be taking the discounted price into account(full shelf price only). Does the guy who buys his beer from Totalwine with the $1off coupon tell you he used a coupon?, No. The only reason people use the discounted price when trading for a RS beer is because everyone knows about the discount. RS members don't have an option to not use the discount, unless they buy it off the shelf.

I think the MSRP is what makes the most sense for the beers. They still had to pay to get the discount that is valid on the beers, its not like it was a first come first serve give away as to who can obtain a discount.

I am not a Reserve Society member nor do I have any of the RS beers so I really have no stake in this, just my two cents on the issue. As stated above, if someone got a beer with a coupon (in this case the coupon cost money to obtain) I would not expect to have the savings passed on to me. It would be nice to receive the discounted rate but I would not expect it and would make my trade offers accordingly.

I trade with a RS member and i have no problem at all with going with the "non-discount" price. They (the RS members) have to pay a membership and most of the time they have to get it shipped.

This shouldnt matter, the RS society does not ship per the FAQ on the site.

If the membership is $295 per year and all they really get are 5 free bottles. They dont ever really break even. Unless they live nearby and use the taproom discount. I dont mind trading at the Retail price. I rcently traded with a RS member and we did a straight up traid. He was very gernouse and I think he is happy with the box he received.

If they use a trustee and then have it shipped to them thats on them.

In the end, it's really not much of a big difference and shouldn't kill a trade, but I personally feel it should be "shelf price". I'm not a stickler about it though and if I don't want my whole allocation, I pass along the extra beers to my friends at the discounted prices if they want them.

I think people make way too big of a deal over $4$. The topic just rarely comes up for me, in either direction. <shrugs>

If I feel we're substantially off, then I'll suggest something. Otherwise, if we're doing like a 2-for-2, and I'm giving up $8 more in beer, I don't really worry about it. Likewise, if I'm getting an extra $5 back, I really don't want to get into nit picking with the other party... Nearly every one of my deals tends to work out this way.

Point being - who really cares if the RS discount is or is not included unless you're trading for a dozen bottles in one deal? On a reasonably sized trade that discount will just come out in the wash of extras/shipping/packaging/etc.

Also, most shelf beers have a huge variance in pricing. Tons of stores provide 15% discounts for buying in bulk. When people complain about pricing, do they take stuff like this into account as well? And how do you even know everyone is being honest with "what they paid"?

I feel like people just like to pick on the RS discount to be pedantic.

I don't usually nitpick over being exactly on $4$, as long as things are within a couple bucks. I also haven't traded many of my RS beers this year. That said, if it comes up, I'm quoting the pre-discount price. Between the cost of the membership, the cost of shipping, and the cost of hooking my trustee up with some beer, I think that's fair.

"If someone else wants a discount on RS beers, they should join the RS next year."

This pretty much sums it up for me. While I get a RS discount, I get that discount only after paying a $295 membership. Additionally, there are shipping costs and thank-you packages to my trustee that are never factored into the price. As others have said, after extras are added, it generally a mute point. But if someone chooses to bust my balls over the price of my beer, I will likely take my trading elsewhere.

If $5 is enough to make you make you haggle, you shouldn't be trading. Especially not for $30 beer.

I don't mind going over $4$, I just ask them to send the difference in a money order so we are even. I always outline all the extras I'm sending ahead of time, so they know how much they owe me. It's never been an issue and I thought everybody did.

Although, one time this dick sent me like thirty rolls of pennies and then charged ME for the extra shipping costs!!!
