I know this is going to get a wide value range but I was just reading another post about not getting the agreed upon extras and one of the posters mentioned the OP being out like $7. I'm curious about how much do people spend on extras that are included? I expect that it depends on the number of trades you do with someone since you're more likely to include more or maybe something bigger but the few trades I've done have really varied. I've never really added up the cost of the extras I was throwing in.

I have never really kept track of the costs but like was stated it depends on the trade and the trade partner. I have included simple extras such as New Glarus and Central Waters regulars as well as throwing in a King Henry here and a Exodus and Lupulo de Hielo there.

Edit: I just realized who the poster was! HaHa

For me it depend on whether this is an established trading partner or a new trading partner, as well as the size of the trade and value of bottles being sent in the agreed upon trade. I will usually send some nice locals from smaller breweries that do not get a lot of hype. Also if I see a want that is easy for me to get I will send one along I probably spend on average around $10-$15 on extra bottles. My most recent trade I was a bit late in shipping out so I sent out a bunch of nice extras to make up for my tardiness, probably close to $50 in extra bottles which is probably excessive, but I was trying to make up for shipping a month later than I said I would originally.

I'll send a new trading partner more in extras than the value of the initial trade if they have "wants" listed that I have or if I have extras of something really good that I think they will like.

Although a little lame, the main factor that goes into the decision is "how much room I have in the box" while not compromising the agreed upon beers or package as a whole.

Extras are fair game. Anyone that complains about not getting as much as they put in on extras is a baby.

For me it depends. If I think the other trader is generally good natured and isn't trying to get as much out of me as possible in a trade they usually get better extras than the trader that is trying to gain as much as they can from the trade. The way I see it, I try to make the generous traders end up with more than the greedy ones even though they asked for less.

To clarify, I look at wants and ask about styles. If I got something they want handy then I have no problem throwing it in. I don't look at a value of the extras either. I throw in what I think are great beers or even beers that my friends like that I haven't tried if they fall into the "liked" styles.

I do have to say that the 8 or so trades I've done, all the traders were more then generous.

"agreed upon extras" = oxymoron. They are EXTRAS! If someone complains on not getting enough extras then they shouldn't get any at all

For 1st time traders i do 2-3 locals or 1 Limited bottle so around $15. Last box I send out had a BA Hi-Fi, Beat B5, and a Hammerhead as extras but that was because I got deployed before I could get his box in the mail. He was very patient and understanding for 7 months so i hooked him up. It just depends on the situation

I usually view extras as tipping. It shows you're being thoughtful and are willing to put forward a little effort to make this game more fun for everybody involved. Somewhere in the ballpark of 20%-30% of the agreed upon trade value is what I'll typically include whether it be in the form of beer or swag. As has been stated time and time again, extras are extra, but if they're agreed upon they become part of the trade and another term should be implemented.

If you just look at it as $7, then you may as well send a 6-pack of Bud Light Lemoncello. Wants, seasonals, rarity, etc. should all figure into it.

If you send someone a BBPt5 as an extra, it's only $5, right, and you're a cheapskate on a $60 trade?

I think of extras as kind of a lottery for both giving and receiving. When it comes to giving - first I check the person's wants. If I have anything on there that isn't too unreasonable, I'll throw a bottle or two in. If they don't have a wants list or if I don't have anything on the list, I'll try to throw in some really good beers that I have on hand at the time (for example, recently I had a bunch of Zombie Dust and traded away more than two sixers as extras). Or I'll check the cellar to see if there's anything worth throwing in (another recent example - '10 Expedition Stout and '10 Third Coast Old Ale). If for some reason none of those work, I'll go to the store and buy 3 or so bottles of good local stuff and/or harder to get stuff. It's basically all based on what I can put into the box when I'm packing it up. I've noticed that the more I trade, the more generous I become with extras. I have way too much beer anyway.

I am from the same school as jpar from above. Usually I'll keep adding extras until the box is full without jeopardizing the originals agreed trade. I try to hit wants if I have the time to pick them up or if I have them in my cellar. I would say I average $15 in extra with regular partners getting more than that.

I try and hit as many wants as possible. If I can't do that, I usually go with about 30% of the value of the trade beers and pick out locals that fit the styles within the trade. I also always ask for stickers and coasters at my bottle shops and try and include those as much as possible.

It all depends on the trade for me. For a long time my standard was one 12oz bottle and one bigger format bottle, usually of something good and, if not local, at least from a brewery that didn't distribute to my trading partner's state. If I can hit a reasonable want, all the better. If it's a trade with a known partner, or the other end of the trade is being generous with his half of what's agreed upon, I'll try to give more either in terms of quantity or quality.

I will try to hit wants or beers that I think should be wants. I really don't factor in the $ per extra. Just what feels right.

My standard go-to is to throw in a few fresh Alpine IPAs as extras, typically 2-4 22oz. bottles depending on how much room I have left in the box. People seem to like this.

I tend to buy extra 6 packs of great locals that I enjoy (and rated well) when I go to the store and will toss in a few of each and try for wants. Usually atleast 3 great locals if they fit, maybe more.

I must agree with this ^^. Size of box is a huge factor. Why fill a box with more peanuts/bubble wrap when I can stick another beer in there.

I'll also be extra generous to people when I mess up and they put up with it.

I was trading with 1 guy, worked out a deal (never exchanged shipping info or anything) and then I got sidetracked and didn't respond for 2-3 days. He worked out another trade with someone, but when he found out that I had turned down another trade in place of his he decided to do both trades to help me out. I sent him like 3-4 things off his wants included an Eclipse EC18 (which I think was worth more than the main trade bottles ^_^).
