has anyone had any instances of beer store employees talking up beers, talking up their store, themselves, or even blatantly lying?

went to a place the other day that i have been a semi-regular at for around 5 years. know everyone by name. pick up a couple bombers and six pack. nothing major. while im grabbing a six pack i notice in the cooler that their is a 4 pack of 2008 bigfoot. when i get to the cash register i comment on how that must be an employees and i wish it was for sale. the employee replies...

" yeah we like to age beers around here. i only age 3 liters though cause those keep better. mostly the stone. i got a lot of those aging. enjoy by, double bastard, you name it. brooklyn black ops ages real good too. when it first came out i bought a log but that didnt last. we drank it every day for about a month. cost me about $400"

now, for various reasons its pretty obvious to say that this guy is full of crap. and im sure hes not the first guy to do this. but why do people do this? are they 'trolling' beer geeks? do they think if they impress you then you will shop there more? do they just want to sound cool?

please share any thoughts on this situation or similar stories!

This happens in all areas on retail. Sounds like he just wanted some attention, your bullshit detector was correct for sure, no biggy.

as a steady customer, i find it pretty disrespectful. to the point where i am almost considering not shopping there anymore. if their employees are lying about this, what else are they lying about? has that beer been sitting in the back forever? do you have the specialty beer i am looking for hidden? is that bacon cider really any good? trust is big for me. especially because their is a few stores in the area with similar selections , and better pricing. but this store is in an extremely convenient location.

When people come into my store I let them know immediately that they are not welcome nor are they worthy of their purchase. Then I throw empty beer cans at them until they leave. Then I count my no money. That's what these people are doing. This is no way to run a business. That's why I've made it all up. Bullshit walks as they say.

Yea, I get a lot of those people that obviously were told what to promote, and have no idea what a beer geek would actually like. A few times I've asked for something and had employees walk in the back and come out with it. It's really frustrating, especially in less well traveled areas where I expect to be able to find Sucks or Hopslam that's shelved in the morning when i get off work in the afternoon, only to find that it's "sold out" when I get there.

The most annoying by far is this one store that gets all the limited bombers and then posts them on their facebook page so all the college kids come in and buy it all up in the morning. I want to take off work for an hour so I can personally take a bomber for myself from one of those skinny jeans wearing wannabes.

I don't talk much to store employees beyond "do you have any ______?" I do sometimes hear them spreading misinformation to other customers on occasion, nothing as silly and outlandish as this though.

That's called marketing and it's what any good business should do. A business isn't obligated to hold onto a product and keep their mouth shut about it until you feel like wandering into their store. What you could do is ask the store to reserve something for you in advance, which they may be willing to do because it's a guaranteed sale and keeps the customer happy.

i can see both sides to this argument. while its not required or expected of the store to save you something, it is a nice personal touch that will create a repeat customer. so in some ways, it is in the stores best interest. i do agree they are not obligated to do this at all. but lets face it, some of us spend a lot of money on beer. if it were me, i would put in the extra effort to make sure my store got that money.

This can happen any time someone is trying to sell something. It can be annoying, very irritating but there is really no reason to be offended or feel disrespected. I enjoy shooting the shit with the beer guys on occasion, but if they feel a need to flex their beer muscles and impress me with their knowledge I'll just ignore it. I guess I don't see this behavior as being all that harmful, I say blow it off.

Yes, let's discourage outing people doing unsavory things because they may have done something unsavory in their life as well. He's not stoning the guy and suggesting he be strung up, just commenting that he is a bad liar.

trust me, it is not a life altering event haha. i am also not super stressed out about it or anything. but i do think that its worth discussing . i also think its a very reasonable to question if you want to spend your money at a store that lies to its customers.

Logs are the tall skinny kegs. And honestly, yeah, Enjoy By is immediately when my brain goes "alright, he's just talking shit. Nod your head, say 'that's cool' and move on."
