So CBC released their Barrel Aged Stupid Stout recently with a two bottle limit. They claimed there were 240 bottles to go around. Brewery only release. So people waited in line to buy their bottles. I was in on this action. This week cases of the beer are rolling out to retailers all over San Diego. I called around and several of these retailers told me there is no limit on the bottles. Is anybody else a little peeved by this? Does anybody know if they sold out at the tasting room? Any word on how many cases were released into distro? Here is the release info posted by Coronado Brewing Co:

"It’s official, we’ve set our Bourbon Barrel Aged Stupid Stout release for January 23rd @ our Tasting Room! Only 240 bottles will be released! Limit 2 bottles per person."

They sold out in the tasting room, but I saw a whole bunch in Bottlecraft this afternoon. They clearly are building up the hype.

I had some in the tasting room after the bottles sold out, and quite frankly I found it a bit lame - clearly not something that should be at the same price level as Parabola. Maybe closer to Anderson Valley's bourbon aged stout? Something I found fishy - I asked three different people in the tasting room what bourbon brand was in the barrels, and nobody had an answer. Hmmmm...

Don't get me wrong. If somebody handed me a glass of it I would not turn it down. Nonetheless, they are going the Mission route here...

I think that could be interpreted either way; 240 "released" in tasting room as opposed to 240 "available altogether." Sneaky wording. I guess I wouldn't care, as long as its good. Anyone try it yet? Thoughts?

And yes, I read the 2 polarizing reviews it's received so far..

Please don't think I was being polarizing.

I liked the beer. I like Coronado. But comparing it to BA Speedway, for example, is a laughable joke. Comparing it to Silva is a joke. Comparing it to Parabola (our mass produced example) is a joke.

I can deal with that. I like places taking a stretch, and I like most of Coronado's efforts. But when you ask "what barrels did you age this in" and get blank stares, it reveals volumes. This obviously was the cheapest bourbon barrels available...

Sorry, I wasn't referring to your review on this thread. I was referring to the 2 actual reviews of the beer on BA. I appreciated your thoughts.

Beer tastes horrible when other people can buy it too.

No need to apologize; my opinion is about as good as mud.

You draw an interesting conclusion. I expected you to finish with "they aged it on bourbon soaked oak chips" or something.

I'll bet the tasting bar staff simply doesn't know what barrels they were aged in rather than they're trying to hide the brand of bourbon that was in the barrels before.

Exactly. Now I'm gonna just throw these worthless bottles in the garbage.

Actually my point is that I would rather Coronado Brewing be a little more transparent about their releases instead of tricking people into waiting in line for a release that will see fairly wide distribution in their local market. Instead of driving out to the brewery and wasting an hour or so waiting in line on a weekday I could have stopped in my local liquor store and bought as many bottles as I like at my leisure.

Related to that - exactly where did everybody park when they went to the bottle release?

Not trying to beat a dead dolphin but this is their websites information.

While the Coronado Collection beers will only be available throughout Southern California, on January 23rd, San Diegans will be able to secure a bottle or two of Barrel Aged Stupid Stout at the Coronado Brewing tasting room. Only 200 bottles will be available and the cost is $14.99 per bottle, limit of two bottles per person, with doors opening at 11am. It is also available on draft in tasters and half pints only.

I know that some of us are beer chasers but there are probably people who would go to the brewery and get it or just forget about it and never chase a beer. I do not think they were misleading.

Yeah, I agree this wasn't completely misleading.. definitely not as bad as Green Flash/Silva Stout situation

I'm not drawing any conclusion - just throwing dung at the wall and seeing what sticks. Old Crow barrels!!!

In retrospect I suppose it isn't absolutely 100% misleading. But capping sales at 240 bottles and setting a low bottle limit and never explicitly saying that bottles will hit distribution sure is a bit confusing/misleading. Especially considering that stores have received a very large amount of the stuff. Lesson learned. Don't attend Coronado bottle releases.

Considering the brandy BA Barleywine they released years back was Everywhere, even in LA, it should be no surprise this one is distro'd wide around SoCal. And considering the "Meh-ness" of that beer, the current release shouldn't be that hard to find around SoCal.

I'm always puling for an awesome BA'd beer from Cali, but, doesn't always turn out so well for some reason.

The argument that they used lesser barrels doesn't make much sense. Old Crow for instance is distilled by Beam and is simply a younger whiskey taken from barrels in less desirable areas of the rack house. I'd say the quality of the resulting beer lies almost entirely on the brewer.

This is a crazy statement. There are far too many to list but here's a few: Parabola, Black Tuesday, BA Speedway.

My guess is that some people, like myself and the OP (?), found out about it through FB, which gives no indication of a release outside of the tasting room.

Luckily I didn’t have to wait at all to get my bottles. And FWIW, I quite liked the draft pour I got in the tasting room – it’s a big blast of bourbon.

I was talking about the places newer to the BA game. And, yup, all those listed are damn good! And stand up to most anything produced elsewhere.
