I brewed APA IPA for the second time, followed the recipe exactly but did refine my whirlpool/dh technique slightly. All my IPA-loving friends gave it higher marks than the original. My tiny town had a local competition recently so I entered: finished Third overall. The comp was small, but we had real BJCP judges. I felt APA IPA was good enough to win, but after tasting First and Second realized there was no shame in third place.

So score one for Wisdom of the Crowds . . . a BA group-based recipe has won an award. Hoping the APA Stout recipe scores well also. Ironically, with a little lobbying on VikeMan's part, we could be calling this VikeMan IPA.

The APA IPA remains one of my top three*, which also includes my PtE pseudo-clone, and arguably my Classic American Creme Ale.

    *top three subject to change

That beer looks great! But right now to me, the background looks even better. I'd drink a whole case of Schlitz to be wherever it is you are.

I just brewed an IPA recipe that I came up with based on all the IPA articles in BYO and Zymurgy that I subscribe to... Im hoping it turns out awesome. I smelled and tasted nice going into the bottle.... im only on day 10 of bottle conditioning so I cant wait.. I cant see how it wouldnt be great. Tell me what you think of this recipe. The reason I say all this is because I am going to brew the BA APA IPA next.

152 mash temp, Us-05 and used Brew water to build the water for a light and hoppy profile.

I think it'll have a hard time competing with the APA IPA.

Well, actually I can't read it because the print is too small. Perhaps I need to get my glasses. But it'll still have a hard time competing against the APA IPA. :stuck_out_tongue:

The whirlpool schedule you list is similar to how I whirlpooled APA IPA and was very pleased. I extended the DH schedule to 14 days on advice of Vinnie from Russian River. Yes, AlCaponeJunior, Pliny the Elder is great and I borrowed it's DH schedule ... it is a pleasure to be in a room with poured glass of either PtE or APA IPA.

When you brew APA IPA you'll see a busy late hop schedule of something like 15/10/5/0. IIRC that was a result of the poll system, the Hop-Heads were voting additions wherever possible. You could probably accomplish the same with 10/0 but I stick with the original.

And yes, it's warm where I live.

Thanks for the info man.. Since your reviews of the beer are so good I think I will just go with the exact recipe. The beer recipe I posted should be good this weekend when the beers should be past the green stage. Cant wait to try the APA IPA though... great color as well. I just want to have fresh IPAs to drink all the time and not spend 10.00 a 6 pack !

I'm also going to rebrew the APA IPA in the near future. I'll probably do a 2-row (+ crystal ?) + Mosaic pale ale with the Chico yeast, and then reuse that yeast for the IPA. Of the 4 IPAs I did last year, the APA IPA was by far the best.
