Have you ever taken local beer with you on a trip with the intent of sharing it with locals?

I ask because I am headed from Michigan to New Orleans in a few months and I plan to visit a well respected beer bar there. I'd love to bring some Short's (Michigan distro only) to give to the staff. My only motivation is to share good beer they can't easily get otherwise.

    Is this a stupid idea?

I think the folks at Avenue Pub (if I guess correctly) would appreciate the gesture. Be sure and talk to the owner and make the gift to her to allocate when and how she chooses.

This is a great idea. I love sharing the wealth. Keep in mind that I live in Salt Lake City, UT, and we have some interesting alcohol restrictions. We also have some incredible beers. I frequent Las Vegas for work, and brought some local Epic brewery beers (Captain Cromptons Pale Ale and Cross Fever Ale) with me for some colleagues to sample. That was a year ago, and I'm still asked to bring more down every time. In exchange, I always get a nice gift basket of Tenaya Creek Red Ryder Ale and Calico Brown Ale for my trouble.

I think this sharing is good. It creates new friends or deepens existing relationships, it lets others know about good regional beers, and, above all, it's fun!

I did this very thing back in September when I went out to CA for a wedding. Brought some southeast goodies to share with the bartenders out west. They loved it. I got my entire tab comped at several places; which was great, I was maybe expecting a free beer, not a whole tab!

First, stop In Louisville on your way down and drop off some Shorts. (Imperial Spruce or Huma Lupa) "thank you"
To the Point, I have many times taken beer with me on interstate trips (pay no attention ABC) and it is usually very well received. Occasionally sometimes it is looked on with a bit of skepticism and even with some defensiveness.... regardless, I still have good beer to drink even if the area I'm visiting does not.

Keep said beer in your backpack/messenger bag/etc. when you go out. Strike up conversation with bartender, see if s/he's someone who's going to appreciate it. Drop name of beer. If their eyes light up, say: "Believe it or not, I happen to have some with me right now." Give them beer.

Just did this two weeks ago while traveling. Got comped a beer, but it was f'n fun either way.

Me and a friend took a road trip to Tulsa last year and brought probably $200 worth of local(ish) beer with us and gave it to another friend who lives in Tulsa.

My buddy who is just starting up his own brewery brought some of his home brew and other local favorites when he came to visit and dropped them off at another brewery. They loved it and talked about beer for a long time. Great idea.

This is a great idea...something I did when I moved down here. Keep in mind we don't get Founders or Bells down here either! The people at Avenue Pub are great, and really know their stuff. If you need any NOLA advice, feel free to shoot me a message. I've only been here a few months but definitely know the good beer spots.

I did this in Antwerp - brought a bottle of Rivertown Lambic to Cafe Gollem. Shared it with the bartender/owner and some of his friends. They thought it was too sour

    Definitely do it.

I always take 2 or 3 bottles of hunahpu with me when I travel and give them to bartenders and servers at different beer bars I go to.

Do you know these locals, or are you just walking around passing out free beer? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Me, I don't do this. We have tons of amazing beer here in Washington but, for whatever reason, a lot of it is draft only. So I'd have to drive around with a few kegs in the trunk, which means I'd have to figure out a way to keep them cold, bring proper glassware, yada yada yada. And besides, when I travel, I usually tend to go to other places that have equivalently great beer. So it seems like this would be a lot of work—and expense and hassle, if I'm flying—for limited gains, for anyone involved. Besides, when I'm traveling I'm usually doing stuff I want to do that I can't do at home, so I don't have a lot of extra time to go striking up conversations about beer with complete strangers. So at the end of the day, no, travel for me doesn't typically involve trying to give away beer to people I don't know.

I also don't ask people if they have a personal relationship with Jesus. Again, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I do this all the time. In fact, I had to pack in a hurry for a trip recently and felt like crap that I didn't bring any beers with me to share. The gesture is always appreciated.

Absolutely do it, I just took a little vacation to Cali and took a sixer of what I drink regularly, which is Karbach Weekend Warrior. I handed out some to the bartenders in the tasting rooms at The Bruery, Societe, and at the bar and bottle shop at Pizza Port. Everybody was real stoked to try something that they hadnt heard of and pretty much each one hooked me up in some small way. Good karma is never a bad idea.

Have done so once, myself. Brought some Russian River to my destination, and it scored some points. Plus, there was now room set aside in the luggage for more beer on the return trip.

I did this with some small bottles of Cantillon last year in Brooklyn.
When barstaff make you (an obvious tourist) feel comfortable and help you out, then it´s nice to have something to offer. I managed to swap one in Spuyten Duyvil for a tshirt aswell as some excellent advice on the best local drinking spots.
