Rochester's newspaper has published a pretty interesting (and lengthy) article about one of the breweries that people seem to love to hate.

    http://media.democratandchronicle.com/passport-to-innovation/genesee-beer

Something that surprised me: although I knew they contract brewed there, I didn't realize that their portfolio sits at about 300 different recipes. That's insane!

Thanks for this article. Genesee is a regional brewer for me and I bought my first can of genesee beer today because I am trying all the lagers I can get my hands on.

I'd like to get some of that Genesee Bock without having to trade. Its hard to find here for some reason.

Email the brewery. When I lived in PA, I had a hard time finding it. They took my zip code and wrote back with a long list of places to try (places I hadn't known to check). First one I called had it available.

Genny Cream is a great beer to drink a lot of for cheap. Don't sleep on it!

I'll be the naysayer. Being old and nostalgic doesn't make it any good.

Never liked it, never missed it.

I think Genny is the king of cheap beer, namely the cream ale. For the price, you cant get much better. And its AMERICAN!

the bock can is one of my favorite can/label designs... I attribute their comeback to this. (not really, but hey it might have helped!)

Funny...a fellow BA'er and good customer just brought in a Bock for me to sample...I must say it was pretty darned tasty for the price point.

I used to buy 6 packs of Genesee tall boys for $3.99 in college. Was the best deal for any beer and they were perfect for drinking while sitting on the beach all day.

No one's saying that it is. My own thoughts on Genny's offerings:

-Genny Lager: a solid offering for hot summer days at a baseball game. Not the world's best beer, but it doesn't taste bad (to me). Also hits the spot after a nice summer run or bike ride, or when I want something to drink straight out of the can while I'm grilling. And yes, seeing as it was my dad's father's beer, I do have a bit of a soft spot for it.

-Genny Cream Ale: The beer that people really love to hate. When consumed in moderation (read: definitely only one or two), it hits the spot. A 24 oz can for a dollar? Perfect for putting in the golf bag.

-Genny Bock: this is actually a solid beer. $7.50 for a 12 pack of one of the best designed cans in the business (again, personal opinion), and it's better than just "okay". A seriously underrated beer, if you ask me.

I don't think they're in the same category as my favorite breweries when it comes to "what is the absolute best tasting beer I can have," but given the price point, I find them to be a great alternative to the BMCs of the world. I'll take them over Bud, Coors, etc, any day of the week.

I drank a ton of Genny Cream Ale in the 16 oz returnable bottles back in the day!

A tall boy of Genny Cream really hits the spot on a humid summer day (not so much in February).

Beer snobs might note that John Kimmich of the Alchemist has been known to have a can or two of Genny or PBR at times. There was always a case in the walk-in at the brewpub. Sometimes it just fits.

Every time I am in western NYS I usually buy some Gene Cream. They had a heritage case in stubbies that included four different beers. Flavour/price point not bad.

Ya man, everything I've had from them has been terrific, it would be a staple if it was shelf here.

Genny Cream Ale in pounder bottles is what I drank in college in the late 70's.
