Were past vintages of boulevards rye on rye 100% barrel aged? It's been a few years since I've had it, but I remember a whole lot more barrel character than I'm getting from the new vintage.

I don't believe it ever was. I don't think any of the smokestack series are 100% barrel aged. It usually hangs around for a bit so I like it with a little age.

This year's version is 67% barrel-aged, which I believe is the same ratio in years' past, but I bet @TheJermis could confirm that for sure on past vintages.

I believe they don't do 100% barrel aging to avoid having a body that's too thin.

it's such a different beer with 1+ years on it. Fresh, I'm not a fan but aged it's my favorite Boulevard offering.

I have 3 years worth in my cellar. All are blend. I believe the same ratio each time but I'd have to double check that.

Rye-on-Rye has always been a percentage of fresh beer blended with barrel aged beer to balance the body and the whiskey/barrel character. Bourbon Barrel Quad has been 100% barrel aged in the past, but it's been a blend of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd use barrels.

I would have loved more barrel character out of Rye-on-Rye. The barrel character I got was so nice, but it was very mild. Of course that's only my opinion and others may disagree. I guess my point is that I'd love to taste 100% barrel aged Rye-on-Rye. Oh, and while I'm throwing requests out, send more Love Child to Southern California next time! Cheers!

I had a 2013 Rye on Rye last night, I think the barrel influence was just right. Enough to notice, but not overpower the base beer.

2013 Rye on Rye has tons of barrel character... Have you had Templeton rye?

I remember the one Rye on Rye I had a few years back had a ton of whiskey character, so much so that I found it a bit distracting. I'm sure there was plenty of barrel character as well. I think I'll get another bottle next time it's out.

PS Imperial Stout 2013 was fantastic moar moar moar

We want our barrel aged beers to have that hint of whiskey/barrel. When I want to taste straight whiskey, I drink whiskey.

....and the American craft scene needs more of this sentiment in my opinion.

Edit: And people have different palates. What a novel fucking concept, eh?

And I do appreciate that in a beer and love most of your beers. It was just my personal opinion that I didn't get much in Rye on Rye. Imperial Stout, which is only 37% aged in barrels as well as having a more overpowering base beer, had more character to me. That's just my palate though and I really appreciate the reply. Cheers!

All of the Boulevard barrel aged beers are near perfect IMO. Something that is often overlooked in brewing is the ability to blend IMO.
