Mmmkay was to rough around the edges for me, so I had a few of the German Lager they had on at the brewpub. I like the Wolverine Gulo Gulo IPL much better.

Yea, the Straub IPL is pretty good. And I enjoyed that they wanted to make something like an IPA but their brewery is set up for only lagers, so what the heck, make an IPL. Bravo, Cascade and Columbus may give you an idea of what they've created.

That may be overstated just a bit. While I've enjoyed everything I've tried from them, I'd say it's a bit early for the coronation ceremony .

Their IPLs are indeed excellent, though.

Being one who lives in Mass, and can sample as much as Jack's Abby as possible (and they are the undisputed kings of IPLs) I would say no. The top IPAs are simply better.

For example Kiwi Rising is one of their highest rated, but it's just not as good as Heady Topper, Union Jack, Flower Power, Sculpin...etc. It's a fine hoppy offering, but not as good.

They're the king of IPL's (and barrel-aged baltic porters). Not lagers. If you can get a fresh Andech's Vollbier Hell or Weihenstephan Original and pit it against Jabby Brau you'll understand they're not "king of everything lagers."

They have a great thing going here in Mass, but the statement that they're an all around excellent lager brewery is a pet peeve of mine.

"I don't like lagers they are boring, except for Jack's Abby, they make the best lagers"- A lot of fucking people.

They are the king of everything lagers for people who really want an ale. I love the beer Jack's Abby is making but that statement is a little pet peeve of mine as well. They have just made a lager counterpart to what every 'fashionable' brewery is doing with ales. Your local has an IPA, DIPA, stout, and RIS? JA has a IPL, DIPL, schwarzbier, and Baltic porter. Throw in one off lager versions of a barleywine, a sour, and a Berliner and you have the ticker formula near completion.

I'm hoping this Sunny Ridge Lager is excellent. The Pro-am was very good and I did enjoy it a lot but too hoppy for the style and overpriced for a pilsner imo. I won't be crowning them the king of lagers though.

Still on the shelf in a store in WI. I'm afraid what it would be like now.
Another that is quite good is Lakefront Local Acre (Wet Hop).

Jack Abby is sensational, everyone I've had has been simply outstanding, if i lived close I'd be at the brewery once a week having a few and bringing some home. Easily my favorite new Brewery this past year..

Obviously, the use of "IPL" is to relate it to "IPA." I agree the term has no connection to this style, but what would you call a hopped-up lager to distinguish it from a regular lager? I mean, beside saying "it's a hopped-up lager."

For that matter, isn't "lager" a little vague? Is there a beer simply called "ale?"

If you ever come across it, Fathom IPL from Ballast Point is awesome!

In the US, pre-craft era, there were hundreds of them. Some still survive (in various states of authenticity):

    Ballantine Ale
    Rainier Ale
    Lord Chesterfield Ale
    Genesee 12 Horse Ale

Similarly, the vast majority of US bottom fermented beers from that era were labeled simply "Beer" or "Lager" or "Light Lager" rather than one of today's recognized "beer styles".

I'm looking forward to that. I sadly skipped Pro-am because dropping $5 for a .5L of locally made pilsner seemed crazy to me

Jacks Abbey gets all the love from the People in the NE. I will say that there is a little place in MI I mentioned that does a good job on the classic lager styles! the hopped up lagers and even does an IIPL and a >10% dark barrel aged lager that is Wolverine brewing in Ann Arbor.

Every reasonable person would agree with you. However, we are talking about U.S. "craft" beer here, where "hopped-up" no longer implies a balancing act, but an un-balancing act, between hops and malt.

Or, as Jack's Abby has said, "you don't want the malt getting in the way of the hops."

Lots of good "hoppy lagers" to be found these days. Sort of like how there was an explosion of "black IPAS, or as I would say dark hoppy ales back in the day. I could never call em black IPAs because the p stands for Pale and there is nothing Pale about a dark hoppy beer. / rambling and Good luck to all "hoppy lagers"
