I've always wondered this: why doesn't The Bruery make IPA's or any hoppy beers for that matter. The only one I have had was their Imperial Pilsner which I thought was very good. Based on their track record with other beers we know they could make a pretty good representation of the style. Thoughts?

Assuming you tried Humulus Lager, you've had their IPA.

Every other brewery's first brewed beer these days is an IPA, market has gotten flooded.... I'm guessing that they've just chosen to focus on other styles

From what I recall, Patrick felt that the Southern California market was already overly saturated with IPAs. I read somewhere that he vowed to never brew one. I think it's safe to say that things turned out ok for him and his brewery, despite/as a result of his decision.

I actually find it refreshing that they don't make one, when so many others (maybe too many) are making plenty of IPAs to begin with... & I say that as someone who seriously loves his IPAs. They make killer sours & they made me love a smoked beer with Smoking Wood. I agree that they could make a really good one, but they don't really need an IPA.

Humulus lager is an IPL. A delicious one at that

Smoking Wood gets almost no love or mention around here. As much as I enjoy the sours from them, Smoking Wood may be my favorite beer they make in distribution. Unfortunately it seems that one is in very limited distribution around here.

Honestly, I'm sure the Bruery could make a decent IPA but why bother? Although a Yuzu IPA with their Belgian yeast sounds like it could be a home run...

Pretty sure battch 1000 was a black ipa.

Because someone smart has realized that IPAs aren't quite as exciting as everyone seems to think they are.

For the same reason Allagash doesn't make one. They focus their talents elsewhere. Nothing wrong with that.

Just go get some IPAs at Societe. The Pupil is amazing. Pretend those guys are still brewing at The Bruery. Problem solved.

The no "IPA" is something Patrick has blogged about several times since starting in 2007 and they always give the same answer when asked - "no". They obviously do make some hoppy beers at times but they do what they do best and the flagship beers are Belgian & European styles like the Saison, Mischief, etc. Obviously the Humulus is hoppy, but technically it is a lager. Their approach is a great example of focus and that every brewery can do their own thing and be successful.

*sarcasm* Because you can't trade them over a long period of time thusly diminishing their value to west coast traders. *sarcasm*

I wish they did make an west coast IPA, and an imperial stout that had a reasonable ABV. If so I think I would find myself willing to brave the weekend bus loads and go there and enjoy a beer or two. It appears they are doing fine without me though.

So Societe and the rare barrel are bruery alums?

I asked this specific question at the tour. They said that there is no rhyme or reason as to why they don't make IPAs, they just choose to concentrate on making the beers they want to make. Hugh Malone is the closest they have to an IPA.

This. There's even a note about that sentiment on the page for Humulus Lager (which is absolutely delicious, btw).
