I was having a discussion with some of the staff at Freshcraft last week about having a 3oz taster option.
I saw that they have a 4 taster paddle, so I asked if they would just sell me 1 taster. Apparently it isn't in their POS system, so the short answer was "No".

I personally like having the option of just being able to order (1) 3oz taster of a beer I'm not familiar with. Or I know I like, but because of my previous consumption amount, don't want to drink a whole pour. The 3oz for me is perfect, it gives me the full taste of the beer without it being too much. Most places will give you a free single sip of something, and that's fine, but I don't feel I can get a solid experience with the small amount.

I'm personally willing to spend $3 for any 3oz pour, basically to make up for any inconvenience to the servers. And $1/oz is generally a larger profit margin for them on any one given beer, with only a few exceptions (At the time of the discussion, the only beer that was more than $1/oz was World Wide Stout, every other beer was less, some significantly).
Let's not bring up Great Divide, their $3 for 3 tasters is such a ridiculously good deal, it would be unfair to expect any other establishment to match that.

So, out of curiosity, does anyone else make use of this option when it's available? If so, it might be worth getting some numbers and presenting them to the few taprooms that don't offer this option and maybe change their minds.

I wish every great beer bar in the city offered this option. It is because of this option that I enjoy going to Hops and Pie so frequently. Something like a 4 oz pour of anything on tap for $2. They seem to be killing it.

Occasionally. During Stout Month I'm all over the 1/2 pour option.

Every brewery that I've been to (and wants my repeat business) will give you a "splash" of any beer on-tap for free. Definitely not 3 oz, but at least a taste to make sure you don't waste $5+ dollars on a pint.

I only order tasters if it's my first time to the brewery and I want to check out their lineup. Otherwise, I just ask for a splash of a beer or 2 and order a pint.

I like the option, especially for higher ABV beers/ expensive beers. Place here in town will have these beers typically priced at $6-$8 for an 8 oz. pour where the 3 oz. pour is $2. Makes total sense, so I typically order a regular beer with a taster of something stronger. So I guess I like the option but like MileHigh said, I will just ask for a taste to try a beer I'm not familiar with.

Depends on the price; I won't spend more than $2 for a taster pour. But like the option when available.

The high ABV beers are primarily what I do them on as well. Like after I've already had 2 full Ten FIDYs from a Breckenridge Whiskey Barrel firkin, but I still really want that taste of World Wide Stout before I leave. The free sip just isn't enough, but a full pour could be too much.

I see peoples' point about keeping it cheap. Since places like Hops and Pie can do the 4ish oz for $2, it's probably safe to assume a profit is still being made. I'm willing to pay up to $3/3oz, but if a spot wants to give it to me for less, that's more than fine by me. Every dollar I save on a beer goes towards another eventually.

I order smallies any chance I get. Yes, it's more expensive in the end, but for me the value is variety. And to safeguard against sub-par performances

I wish more bars/brewery taprooms would sell half pours. Great Divide does (or they use to at least, I haven't been in quite a while), not sure about any others. I'd like more than a splash, but not necessarily a whole pint, especially if I want to try a few of their beers but don't feel like drinking 4-5 pints in one sitting.

Half pours/pints are easily my favorite option.

I find most places up here in Fort Collins, bars and breweries, provide half pours. The only one that doesn't that I can really think of is Grimm Brothers, which is probably one of the big reasons I don't hit them up more often than I do.

Does anyone know when the World Wide Stout is released. First time I've seen it in my town in 5 years.

Hops & Pie is the first place that came to mind when you mentioned tasters. I think it is a great option for higher ABV beers or any beer I am not familiar with, for that matter.

Vine Street and Hogshead do 10oz pours. Denver Beer does tasters (3oz?). Crooked Stave used to do 1/2 pours or something in the old (not oldest) place.

We serve tasters of any of our beers for $2. The glasses are 3oz, so the pour is just slightly less. You can order as many or as few as you want to create your own flights. We have 30 small Colorado breweries on tap, so flights are pretty popular.

By the way, a sip (taste) is free as long as you don't over-do the requests!

I was going to say if you just want a small taste, most breweries would give you a splash for free.
