Makes a lot of sense. I guess, when it comes down to it, it is all about what we value most, personally. I go through phases when I place too much value on "rare" beers rather than enjoying what I can obtain easily, which is ridiculous because I have access to tons of great beers here in Michigan. We all reach a breaking point when it comes to price and attainability, though. Honestly, with KBS, I don't know what my breaking point will be or if I will ever reach it. Kind of scary, right?

At any rate, thanks for the insight.

This is interesting, too. Right now, my budget is quite limited, so I have to make these kinds of tough choices. I usually have 3-5 beers a week, so I can justify a little more of a price per oz.

My wife and I are both in grad school for non-academic jobs, so if we attain the salaries we're hoping for, I'd have a significantly larger budget. I love beer, and the "collecting rare ones" aspect is fun for me, too; so, it'll be a challenge to make wise choices and not just "spend it because I have it" once my beer budget is more than ~$20/week.

Glad to have you aboard the hype train! ha just kidding. Its a great beer and worth the money. Wait til you find CBS, its just a bit better (if you can imagine that).

Can I ask what you find better in CBS? I believe KBS is 10x better than CBS.

KBS certainly is awesome. It's amazing how smooth it is. It's so damn drinkable, it takes every bit of willpower one has to just sip it and not take huge gulps.

    Nothing? Great answer.

The first time I had CBS on tap it was amazing. Had it out the bottle fresh and it tasted exactly like regular breakfast stout. I have another bottle but doubt it will get better with age. No bourbon flavor at all. Nice maple flavor but that was about it.

I'd love to try a CBS but I can't get anything near rare enough to trade for it. Takes a lot to score a CBS it seems like.

I wish I had the same experience as you...one of my biggest letdowns...

Totally overrated...Traded a King Henry for a CBS...I wish I could have my King Henry back...

    Cheers!

kbs = amazing beer. CBS = amazing beer but i think some of the beer geek contingent felt a bit let down because CBS does not have the "smack you in the face" quality ala black tuesday that the kids are all after now.

Ive had it on tap and from bottles. I prefer it fresh, as does Heatwave33, whom I sent my second bottle to. Honestly, nothing compares;its a unique beer. Give me something that compares or beats it, and il listen. I was being honest.

Let me see...Goose Island Rare. CBS does not even come close to Rare. In my opinion that is. I can name about 10-15 others if you would like?

I can also name a ton of BA's that have had it on tap for the first time at Extreme Beerfest and felt very much let down.

Is Rare aged in Maple Syrup Bourbon Barrels? I dont think so. So its different. You give me a maple Syrup aged Imp Stout thats comparable or better than CBS, then well talk. I understand that there are some local stuff that might just compare to CBS, but I havent had it.

Rare is aged in PVW barrels. Much better than any maple barrels.

    Here ya go:

CBS out of the bottle was a let down to most my friend. It was a very nice stout but nothing like the first few times they brewed it and put it on tap. Maybe next time...

I can only speak from experience, and I havent had this one. I bet this one is amazing, and I should probably arrange a trade for it. Also, youre probably right. I cant afford Rare, so I should probably shut up now.

I agree with you though...Rare and CBS are very different. I was just talking about Imperial stouts that are better (IMO) than CBS.

Try to trade for the Lawsons beer with someone from Vermont and compare. Many may disagree with me about Fayston not being better than CBS but I believe the bourbon and maple come through much better than CBS.
