I feel smarter just listening to everyone's music choices today...wow! I really am inspired by everyone's thoughtful marriage of wonderful tunes and craft beer. Thank you for elevating NBS to new heights!

I was a little disappointed with NB Rampant today. It's a very good beer but I guess I was expecting a "ramped up" Ranger and it it not that.

Cheers and Happy NBS everyone! Thank you for making it a great one!!

While it's certainly no storm, it has been snowing slow and steady all day. And, it's been miserable in Daytona, so we're still on hold in the 500. I was gonna add another new brew earlier, Lizzy's Red Lager from Orlison Brewing, but it turns out I had reviewed it a while ago. But, I did have this one waiting: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31004/98761/?ba=beertunes

Greetings NBS - from Southern, CT

The weather was unreal this weekend with temps reaching 55 at one point today. A nice break from the ruthless winter we've been enjoying. We had some family in town this weekend so it was nice to relax instead of the usual chores.

The weather made this NB selection a no brainer. I enjoyed this brew way more than the average, but I can't say enough good things about it. For $7-8 per bottle, I will certainly be buying more Fathom next time I see it!

I'm having Cold Snap from Sam Adams today.
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/109458/?ba=RJLarse
It's a pretty good white ale.

Cold snap is appropriate, because that is exactly what is going on in these parts today. 32 degrees and snowing right now on the Columbia Basin. Winter's last gasp? Let's hope.

Look closely in the pic an you can see my Weber grill in the background, ready and waiting for warmer days.

    Happy Trails!

Lakefront Eastside Dark. Rich, creamy, sweet...but not too sweet. No bitterness. Going to pair with Spaghetti Pie...not sure how that is going to work out.

There is a bit of spring in the air here today. Almost 70 degrees this afternoon, and crazy sunny. After running errands and doing chores today, we decided to fire up the grill and make some cheeseburgers with grilled asparagus.

Tonight's new beer is Stone Brewing's Matt's Burning Rosids Saison. As you can see from my review, I'm a bit above average on this one, but I think it's a really solid saison, and love the tribute as well.

This has been an auspicious week. After totalling my bike on a patch of ice last weekend, my hopes were not high, but, aside from the typical stresses associated with the home stretch for school, there have been several things in the last couple of days that have really just made me smile. During the debriefing for our pediatric rotation, my instructor told me she hoped I wanted to go into peds, because I work really well with that age group. My dream is to work pediatric oncology, so to hear that unsolicited was probably the best compliment I could receive. Yesterday, at my last OB clinical, the family I was taking care of asked for contact information for the clinical coordinator. I was worried at first (because I tend to worry), but got the info. They thanked me and said they wanted to send a thank you card to the coordinator to thank them for the student's that they had worked with. Score. On top of it all, my former best friend (huge falling out last autumn precipitated by a lot of things, but mainly the fact that his ex is my best friend, and his current gf is manipulative, paranoid, and vindictive with a persecution complex and is instilling those qualities in him) texted me out of the blue to congratulate me on the superbowl, on almost being done with school, and just to say hi. Like I said: auspicious.

Now, as for the important things: Grapefruit Slam is very aptly titled. Stone (who is circuitously behind this brew) does big bitter beers well, and this is no exception. Definitely for the lovers of pithy citric grapefruit peel, though. @NiceTaps Well crafted, as they are wont to do, and while I wouldn't call a bomber of 8.2% sessionable by any means, it's not going to preclude me from finishing up my studies, either.

The knishes are in the oven, and the dishes will have to wait to get done. Just don't look at any gastoschesis pictures if you plan on having sausage any time soon.
A poppy variation of an old Neruda poem has been stuck in my head all day:

Cheers all, hope you're warm and toasty with something you enjoy in your glass!

Having my first Bear Republic apex in my Lagunitas mason jar. This is excellent. Just as good as some of the best dipa's I've had. Cheers and happy NBS!

Greetings from rainy Louisiana, as we are in the midst of Mardi Gras and the parades are in full swing. Enjoyed some great new beers this weekend, including Hopslam and the Stochasticity Project Grapefruit Slam that has made some appearances today. Today's new beer is a solid, sessionable pale ale out of New Zealand. Not the best I've had but a fine drink:

I think I may have just had my first infected beer. I'm trying valiantly to finish it, but I have low hopes. The New Stout in question is Weyerbacher Heresy - imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels, clocking in at an impressively reasonable 8.0% ABV.

I had high hopes, because a low-ish ABV BA stout sounds awesome. So, here's why I think it's infected.

    1) Appearance. The head was very fizzy; I'm not used to that. Not an over-carbonated beer; a head that fizzed at me. That was weird. The poor retention isn't all that odd for the style, so I didn't hold that against it.

    2) Flavor. The first and strongest flavor is a tart sourness. Maybe not quite Tart of Darkness levels of sour, but way, way more than any normal (or BA) stout I've ever had. It's up front and immediate; it's more potent than the malts, or even the whiskey; and it lasts all the way down the throat.

    3) Mouthfeel. Other reviewers have mentioned that this is a thin mouthfeel for the style; thin is an understatement. It's about as thick as water.

    4) Ratings. I'm punched in at -30% rDev. That's...quite a bit, my worst negative rDev, in fact.

    Here's the review.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/392/18198/?ba=Roguer

Browsing the other reviews, they seem all over the place, but from the few I read, no one else mentioned a bracing acidic sourness, so I'm going with unintentional. Even if it were intentional, if this thing isn't marketed as a sour, then it's just off. This is absolutely nothing like what I want out of a stout (and, for the record, Tart of Darkness is so sour that I wouldn't go for it, either, if I wanted a stout; I'd go for it if I wanted a sour/wild ale that was dark instead of lightly fruity).

LeSigh. What a crappy way to close out my New Beer Sunday.

Here's hoping you all dodge the -30% rDev bullet today!

Also, happy new brewery Sunday! Up for today is Palate Wrecker from Green Flash Brewing Co. Now, I don't think it wrecks your palate (at least compared to a Rauchbier) but this is for sure a one and done. Heck, I don't want another until they're out again. I do, however, want to try more from Green Flash. Maybe next time I'm in San Diego. It is tasty though. Rocking a new avatar this week. Today was a hectic busy day. Working on my online grad school class, lunch with the parents, cleaning the house, and then dinner with the in laws. Now I'm relaxing while watching the Daytona 500 looking forward to the cold weather that is coming. Disappointed that Truex is already out!

    Cheers!

    Howdy NBSers!

So today has been a good day. I spent the day at a friend's house watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the Food Channel. I know, it sounds pretty sweet.:sunglasses: Not only that, I tried a new brew that went down pleasantly enough. The brew is called Old Fezziwig Ale, and it's a winter warmer by Samuel Adams. Here's what I thought of it-

Poured a slightly hazy ruby color with a finger length of tan head that dissipated slowly into a cap and retained pretty well. Aroma was very bready and sweet, with honey and toffee being the most distinct of the aromas. Taste was sweet and malty, but not overly so on either end. Body was surprisingly big for a beer of that ABV, yet it still went down nice and easy. The honey aftertaste was a bit abrupt.

Overall, I enjoyed this brew even though winter warmers are not exactly one of my favorite styles of beer. I was curious about if this beer should have been picked up by me earlier by me. I find that some spice notes are a part of the winter warmer style, but I didn't get any of that. The bottle said that it should be consumed by May, and it was far from an offensive beer, but I'm still curious about if such flavors did exist and just faded away. Oh well, I dug it anyways.

I think it's time to dumb down the music a bit...

    Have a great week everyone!
    Cheers!

On the tail end of new beer Sunday, I had a most delectable IPA. This booming baby is a gift from our friends up north, eh? Nice and crisp, with a clean finish, it the Canadian equivalent of citradog. I approve.

HAPPY NBS!!! (Happy New Gray Monday Sunday)
I don't want anybody to take this the wrong way, but today it reached 80 in So. California. High clouds graced the skies looking as if a child had roughly brushed them out like cotton. Yet, these days of drought may soon have a few days of relief, much needed rain is on the horizon for this week. Please, let it be so.

NBS was a beautiful day. Gray Monday made a Great Sunday. For those unfamiliar, Gray Monday is the Black Tuesday variant with hazlenuts. This has all of the beauty of Black Tuesday with a slight vanilla leaning nuttiness. It definitely brings another dimension to Black Tuesday. Vigorous pour brings almost no head, and what comes dissipates quickly. Deep dark mahogany hue, full mouth, chocolate meets bourbon barrel, slight roast, yet there is that hazlenut finish. Search this one out.
