I spoke to management at Beachwood today. They sold over 1700 tickets at $5 each for the chance to BUY an 8 oz. pour of Younger. They estimate having 160 pours. This sounds completely nuts.

I've heard of some bars charging close to $40 for a glass. No way am I paying that....is this stuff that much better than elder?

Is it that much better? Yes.
Would I pay $40 for a glass? No way.

Younger is very good. Very good. It is especially good the first time you have it. However, it does not cure cancer and, while good, I wouldn't wait in a line longer than a couple of minutes. Yes...I hope I get to try this year's release. No, it won't kill me if I don't.

By the way, the second growler I had of it we inadvertently drank some with Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. It was one of the single best combinations of food and beverage on the planet - for real.

FYI, pretty sure the Beachwood winners get a pint, not 8oz.

    It's worth trying once.

Worthy trying once, but curb your enthusiasm. I'm sure that a lot of the living up to expectation is to not look like a fool for waiting so many hours for a glass of beer.

Any beer with that much hype--and it could be the best beer in the world--will still be 90% hype.

Worth trying if you don't have to engage in insane feats of waiting/ridiculousness to try it. But don't wait in line for hours.

I’ve had PtY the past 3 years and have never paid more than $1/oz for it and never waited more than a minute to order. Just be a good patron at your local bar and pay attention to social media (which is a good rule of thumb for any special beer release).

Good advice. Also if you are willing to make a short drive or plan a morning/afternoon it ain't that hard to get in California. It is very good and I am looking forward to a couple tastings I expect to come easy in the next week or two.

"Worth" is a relative term but IMHO, no.
Fresh Simtra year round in bombers for $9 takes the cake for me. No wait, no limits, no fuss or pretentiousness.

You have to try it once, then you can make your own decision if it was worth it. If did it once waited in line 2 hours or so got a 10 oz pour and thought it was really good. I have yet to go back and wait in line again....

I suppose it's this way with all things that get a cult following, but much of the crowd going after it now aren't really dedicated craft beer drinkers/enthusiasts. I've seen it first hand, a bunch of times. In a beer town like SD they hear about this beer and think it's the coolest thing in the world if they can say they've had it. That makes it not worth it for me anymore, though I've had some spectacular moments over the years drinking PtY.

I posted about this on another thread the other day, but, yes, I think it's worth it, but not if you only get 6-8oz. Last year I did the whole RR thing, waited 8 hours, and we could drink as much as we wanted. It's a beer that really develops as it warms and fills your palate. Most places in L.A. were doing 6-8oz pours, I waited 2 hours at Verdugo Bar, and I was lucky enough to get a second pour. Only with the second pour did I remember how great a beer this can be.

Sounds like a nice experience to be able to have what you want served, instead of a half glass.
I find what you're saying about the second pour to be true with whatever I'm drinking at home or in a pub. Whatever I'm drinking I seem to really like the first initial sip after inhaling the aroma, then the second pour seems to have it going on even more than the first glass. Taste buds adjusting? Endorphins? Who knows.
But I do highly doubt that I will ever have PtY unless it falls in my lap or I accidentally stumble upon some by happenstance...I just don't have the patience!

Most places charge ~$6-$8 for a 10-12oz pour of a really good DIPA/TIPA in which case you'll wait anywhere from 0-5 mins in line.

Most I'd do for a Younger is $10 for a 10oz pour waiting no more than 5-10 mins.

Younger is now 10years old. When it was released there wasn't anything g else like it on the market at that level of quality. Much like Elder it was a ground breaking beer that opened the doors for many to follow in its footsteps. Are there other equally good or better beers out now? Of course. PtE and PtY set the bar for the west coast style of IPA, double/triple.

Many people who seek it out do it to remember when this was all there was. I didn't have it until '08 (I think) and there wasn't this shitshow around it. As Sage said, you can still find it for a decent price without waiting 2 to 8,hours. You just have to be patient.

So no, if you miss it you're not missing out on a transcendent expierence. There are many other excellent beers of this style around. I'm having to to remember what it was like years ago and to pay thanks to Vinnie for really breaking ground.

It was $5 per raffle (sold out) and it's not a chance to purchase a glass (pint) of younger with each raffle ticket. Winners will have a week (2/25 - 3/6) to redeem their pints of Pliny the Younger at the assigned Beachwood location. So if you buy a ticket for $5 and you win, you get a pint. If you buy 3 or 5 and win, then you get 3 or 5 pints. I think $5 for a pint of Younger is worth it if you've never had it before. Been there and done that a few years ago and now I'm over it and moving on to better beers out there.

this beer was steller several years ago, but since than a lot of breweries have caught up and have been putting out just as good- if not better, hypeless beers.
