If you could eliminate any three beer styles, what would they be and why?

    My picks:
Saison - expensive style and does nothing for me that a few other similar style won't do

Barleywine - I've tried a few, and it's not a style that I 'get', the ones I have had didn't have much complexity in the flavor other than an abundance of booze, no thank you

IPA - yeah, I said it! Now before all the hop heads come to lynch me, hear me out. It's a style that I am indifferent to, I could drink one every now and again. I think that american brewers have put too much of a focus on this singular style and it is taking away from having some of these brewers go out and experiment with other styles. I might only temporarily suspend production of IPA's or at the very least limit brewers to one or two IPA's in their lineup. Instead of releasing 7 variants of an IPA, how about you brew 2 and start experimenting with other styles that are under represented?

    Ouch you picked some favorites.

    My picks:
    Blonde and light lager.

Have never sought out a blonde. Light lager is pretty obvious.

Forgot the third, either American Adjunct for more obvious reasons or Kvass because no one will miss it.

Wow, three of my favorite styles you picked there. I suppose I could easily do without malt liqueur, pumpkin ales, and milk stouts.

I'll not choose light lager as it's a painfully obvious choice.

    My three:

Kolsch (a good pils is a all that is needed)
Cream Ale (a bunch of good styles can easily substitute)
Scotch Ale (I just don't care for them)

Wow OP, we've got very different taste!

    Mine would be:
    - Scotch ale
    - Cream ale
    - Nut brown ale

Scottish Ales because they are a made up style which are an insult to Scottish brewing.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard as this is a hypothetical, but "styles" are nothing more than "guidelines." Brewers are going to continue to make beers they (and the public) want. If the "styles" dissappear Saisons will migrate into Belgian Pale Ales, Barleywines into Strong Ales, and IPAs into either Pale Ales or Strong Ales.

That being said, I'll play along - the Black & Tan style always perplexed me...

    Scotch Ale
    Light Lager
    Kolsch

The rest are all good, although if I had to pick more, Saison would be my next, I just never got interested in them.

California Common - too obscure to be its own style
Blonde - pale ale can take over the blond category, save the hoppy pales for IPAs
Stout - Lets just call it all porter so we can stop trying to figure out the difference

Why pick 3 of the most popular and well recieved styles when there are so many ones that you probably have had once. Even if you don't like them now you may grow to them but as mentioned eliminating malt liquor, adjunt lager, and light lager (a true lager is fairly light so "light" lager is almost redundant). Then you have things like a faro, black and tan, chile beer, and japanese rice lagers that are not sold often/at many places thus maximizing the options you would have should you eliminate them.

    None.

To each their own, I personally do not like Rauchbier, but far be it for me to impose my tastes on others or deny the great historical and cultural significance many styles hold; Bamberg, despite its affinity towards Rauchbier, is a wonderful place to visit.
