I found the other day at the six pack shop a 2013 Rogue XS Dead Guy Ale and a 2012 Rogue XS Old Crustacean Barley Wine. Both were delicious and tasted a slight bit different from the non-XS versions. What exactly is the XS Series, what makes them different from the original beer? I searched online and was unable to find the answer. If someone could help me out here I would really appreciate it.

The XS Series is a variety of subpar beer for their respective styles that are more over-priced than their other competitors. However the bottle art is un-matched and un-rivaled...

Rogue makes some good beer but they are overpriced for sure. Sounds like a marketing gimmick to make you buy both varieties. Mission accomplished, another bonus for the CEO!

I'm gonna like this thread. A welcomed excuse for much deserved Rogue bashing.

I am sure they make some good maybe even great beers but I continue to pass their stuff up due to pricing that is often absurd. There are too many other great options that offer a better value. I am not a bottle collector, just want a good beer at a fair price.

    Cheers!

Pricing varies across the country their regular bombers here are about the standard 6 to 7 dollars where as further east the price jumps they make some delicious beers Imo the one Xs I had though I did not particularly enjoy

It's not exactly wonderful to see all the posts that completely ignore the OP's question but chime in just to knock the beers he's asking about. Nice way to make the chap with two posts feel welcome. Rogue conditioning in full effect.

OP: According to the Rogue website (and this one) XS Dead Guy and Dead Guy are two different beers. Rogue's site lists the ingredients and some stats for the beers.

I completely agree that they are overpriced, but I have not found them -- in my opinion -- subpar.

The XS series is kind of Rogue's experiments with different styles. They were called XS because they originally came in 8 oz bottles, but theyve since scrapped the small bottles. Now they come in bomber size, and are generally good to ok. I heard appalling things about Double Dead Guy, but I didnt try it personally. Old Crustacean and XS Imp Stout are actually pretty good beers, theyre just expensive.

As for Rogue, Double Chocolate Stout is pretty good, but 7 Hop was really, really good. I mean Juniper Ale is interesting. Dead Guy is a classic in an under represented style. Honey Kolsch was ok, light but not bad. They get the same flack that Sam and Ken get; they own the grandfathers of craft beer, and that leads to making alot of beers that we tend to shy away from because theyre not hoppy enough, or not bourbon aged, or not sour.

    Here's Sam's words:
It’s pretty depressing to frequently visit this site and see the most negative threads among the most popular…Yet so many folks that post here still spend their time knocking down breweries that dare to grow. It’s like that old joke: “Nobody eats at that restaurant anymore, it’s too crowded.” Except the “restaurants” that people (crap) on here aren’t exactly juggernauts. In fact, aside from Boston Beer, none of them have anything even close to half of one percent marketshare.

It’s interesting how many posts that refer to Dogfish being over-rated include a caveat like “except for Palo…except for Immort…etc.” We all have different palettes which is why it’s a great thing that there are so many different beers. At Dogfish we’ve been focused on making “weird” beers since we opened and have taken our lumps for being stylistically indifferent since day one. I bet a lot of folks agree that beers like (ours) don’t seem very weird anymore. That’s in large part because so many people who have been part of this community over the years championed them and helped us put them on the map…We could have taken the easy way out and just sold the bejeezus out of 60 Minute to grow but we like to experiment and create and follow our own muse. Obviously there is an audience that appreciates this as we continue to grow…We have mostly grown by just sharing our beer with people who are into it and letting them decide for themselves if they like it. If they do we hope they tell their friends about us…Knowing each of your palettes is unique you will probably prefer one beer over the other. That doesn’t mean the one you didn’t prefer sucked. And the breweries you don’t prefer but are growing don’t suck either. (emphasis mine) Respect Beer.”

And one great, heart-of-the-matter response from a BA reader:

“This thread is hilarious. Seriously? Bells, Founders, FFF, Surly, RR, DFH, Bruery, Avery, Cigar City, Mikkeller are all overrated? Since I’m from Ohio, I’ll pile on and add Great Lakes, Hoppin Frog, and Brew Kettle to the list. You’re welcome.

Hopefully soon we will have every craft brewery in the US on the list.”

What style is that? Fake maibocks??

If they didn't want $14 a six-pack, I wouldn't give them crap. But they do and I do.

Its labelled Ale, but listed as a Maibock everywhere. Is it actually lagered?

No, it is brewed with their own Pacman Yeast. It is not a true Maibock, however it fits that style better than it fits any other style so they call it that. Lot's of beers are not true to stlye.

VncentLIFE said it quite well in his first paragraph. As for the quote... I understand why he posed it. If anyone doesn't, that's an issue of perception.

I live in the NorthWest, so Rogue's prices are normal for the nature of their product (about $8-9 per 6 pack). For those on the east coast wondering why it's priced so high; that's cause of freight and other details that I'm unsure of, since I'm not a retailer of brew. Blame the store owner for the high prices if you want. I wouldn't blame anyone for not buying a $14 six'r, I don't! For what it's worth, I do really enjoy what they have to offer. As well as most of Oregon's brews.

    regards,

    Chris

I assume you mean Double Dead Guy, because as far as I know there has never been an XS Dead Guy. It's a solid beer, but not worth $12 per 750ml. As for the Old Crusty, it's an awesome barleywine, but at $17/bottle I almost never buy it.
