I see lots of posts where people talk about 6 pack pricing of "said" beer from their area. Just a suggestion so we can all relate apples to apples (cost of living, taxes etc), but lets also use BMC bottle 6 pack pricing as well since I think the craft beer relationship to BMC is really most important. I see alot of claims that people can get SNPA for $6.99 or $7.99 a six pack in their area or how cheap Sucks is etc. I think best I've seen SNPA in MD is $8.99 a sixer (and BMC bottles are usually in the $5.99-$6.99 range most places...so SNPA is $2-3 more expensive a six pack than Bud). Just thought this suggestion to compare to BMC in your area (since everyone has BMC locally) would be more useful.

I think he's trying to say that if you are going to post pricing that you should also post BMC pricing as a reference.

I think the major difference is that in most states beer is sold in grocery stores. That's where you are probably going to find SNPA cheap. Places like Target and Wal-Mart too. In MD you don't have that option.

Having said that, in Chicago area liquor stores SNPA is typically $8.99 and BMC cans are still $1 cheaper than you.

I, for one, don't even pay attention to the BMC pricing to be able to quote what those prices are in the bottle shops that I frequent. I presume that no craft beer prices are as low as BMC, and that's all I know.

That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. I'm never close enough to BMC products to see the pricing anyway.

A recent poll found that only 74% of Americans knew that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and not the other way around. This would explain many of the posts on this forum.

He just wants to use this as a way to somewhat standardize what people are staying. I think it makes sense.

But now we have to introduce "suitcase" pricing into the equation.

In my area Boulevard is the same price as Miller, Coors, Bud in six pack format.

Ok, cool, you don't buy or look at BMC products. His point was that by using a common point of reference that wasn't subject to limited distro or availability then you could better compare beer prices across different regions. Every last one of us can get BMC products so using their price as a baseline would kind of make sense. I don't think his approach would work but the idea isn't dumb.

I think EVERYONE should post the difference between craft and BMC in their city PRONTO!

NA, who drinks BMC ? Not the 99% of users here. I usually buy 12 packs, a much better value. Why would I buy a 6 pack for 8-9 $ when I can buy a 12 pack for 12-14$ ?

Showing an amazing lack of knowledge on how beer gets distributed in the US, whether it is craft or not....beer prices are NOT set by the brewer, whether it be one of the "big boys" BMC, etc or Sierra Nevada / Sam Adams or someone smaller down on the beer food chain....what is the point with this obsession with prices, as they will vary widely all over the country, craft or not? Brewers make their profit margin, distributors make theirs, and then finally the retailer will make their % off the beer....it seems rather counter-intuitive to keep asking what you pay in CA, versus here in OH, or wherever....

Whoa, wait a minute. You mean beer costs less somewhere else? Does the price of everything vary from place to place? Oh it does? Well then, it's no surprise that the price of beer varies from place to place.
The bottom line is, if craft beer is more expensive where you live, you either pay the asking price without shopping around, shop around for the best price, don't buy the product because it's too expensive or move to where it's cheaper. Complaining about beer prices is not as bad as complaining about the weather, but if you don't like the price, don't buy the product. Believe it or not, it's a luxury item, it's not milk for your kids.

I can appreciate the concept, but it just doesn't seem practical. What's the universal BMC product that would be the "gold standard"? Coors Light? Bud? High Life? Are we talking supermarket prices? Convenience store? Those variables make a huge difference. Who's going to make the decoder rings necessary to translate the pricing info?

Its an interesting question, not sure why so many people are jumping down this guy's throat. I was actually surprised to see that BMC pricing was so close to the lowest-priced craft brewers in the Boston area (typically in the Sam Adams/Sierra Nevada/Ipswich/Smuttynose range). In many cases its only about $1 - $2 different. Even for 12-packs.

I applaud this attempt. I too am tiring of all the price talk. It totally depends on where you live and what the state alcohol taxes are or general liquor sales laws are. I wish I could get Boulevard at all let alone for the same price as BMC!
