Messaged FW and got the scoop on their upcoming session IPA.

Me: Hey guys, what's the word on the Easy Jack session IPA??? I thought I read something awhile back but haven't heard any recent news. Thanks!

Them: No idea what you're talking about, Dalton! Just kidding… Easy Jack is being released next month, but we haven't announced it yet. Only insiders who have been given some tips know about it. Once it's released, you'll definitely be seeing it!

Me: Oh awesome awesome....should I expect it to be released everywhere like union jack?

Them: Yup!! It's gonna be Union Jack's little brother!

Bets on the next brewery to make one of these?

Someone needs to start a thread about breweries NOT making session IPA's these days…

That being said… Easy Jack: Get in my glass!

We used to call them pale ales. Of course there's a market for these. They're for people who can't handle an actual IPA but want to sound cool by saying they drink them.

Pale ales are boosting hop/alcohol content and ipas are retreating.

    Uh....I don't know anything anymore.

I understand what your saying, Kevin. I'm trying to get behind this market, but to me, the only time buying this stuff, is when I'm going to the beach or having a cookout.

so if you make a pale ale stronger with more hops its an IPA, if you tone that back down isn't it just a pale ale? this whole "session""IPA" thing is like a big joke as the breweries just rebrand hoppy pale ales for the current market, which has a thing for both "Session" and "IPA"

I think of it as an over-hopped pale ale.

In all fairness firestone had this pic released a long time ago.. Before stone even got the idea to do their go to ipa.. So technically firestone did it first. Now who does it better is gonna be the real question.

When you hear the words "Session" and "IPA," what comes to mind initially? I would imagine it'd be "low alcohol" and "hoppy," both of which describe these beers perfectly, therefore making for a great description on a label. No need to overthink how these and pale ales are similar and dissimilar.

Same here. I thought Stones Go to was pretty good, so I'll try it with that in mind.

Looking forward to a four-way comparison between this, Stone Go To, Sierra Nevada Nooner and Lagunitas DayTime. Could be interesting to taste, match notes side by side (by side by side).

Watery and something for brewer's to strive for, like a holy grail or just a dream. The best I've had was Afternoon Delight from Burley Oak that is 3% and 80 IBUs. That was followed by Easy IPA. Then way down in the water well is Oz from DuClaw. However, I just got Boulevard's Pop Up (and single wide), Stone's Go To, and the new SN 4 way IPA pack with nooner. So, we will see how those go. I mean I haven't had one that comes close to a well crafted IPA like Union Jack and they are light years away from something like OTWOA. However, I realize they aren't trying to be those, but I just can't get over their lack of a decent mouth feel. At their worst they taste like hop water and at their best they taste like hop tea.

p.s. I just remembered DayTime and that is probably the best one I've had that is commercially available. Tastes like a true IPA.

As always some very interesting and valid points on here. However, we tend to see the same comments and complaints with every session IPA that's released or discussed. One poster above says it's for people who are lightweights but want to sound cool saying they're drinking an IPA. Personally, I've enjoyed the session IPAs I've tried, especially Founders, although I much more often drink IPAs/DIPAs. To me, they're basically hoppy light beers for the craft crowd. Like someone said, good for hot beach days or barbecues. My wife loves the All Day IPA, but she certainly doesn't drink it to "be cool." It's not like these breweries are replacing existing regular IPAs with these, so I don't see the problem. To each his own.
