Good evening, NBS, nothing too exciting for me today unfortunately. I had my first "recreation" softball league game tonight, and got back and needed a beer, preferably, easy drinking. We lost 41-2...yes, you read that right. It was...interesting, but hey I scored one of the two runs so I got that going for me I guess?

Anyway, the new beer is Terrapin Recreation Ale. I even said the hell with it, and consumed straight from the can. This is the first time I've consumed a beer out of a can or bottle in quite some time...Anyway the beer comes as advertised. Nice piney and grass in the taste, with some citrus as well. Enough bitterness there to drink easily but still be somewhat interesting. Overall, I dug it, and drinking from the can made it even better.

As far as softball goes, my makeshift team definitely needs some work. Cheers and happy Sunday!

    hey all,
back again for my second NBS post. I like the idea of trying new beers and sharing our thoughts. figured I could go little lighter tonight since our temps are in the 30 to 40 degree range and might even hit 50 tomorrow. stopped by my go to mom and pop shop this morning and had a new glarus serendipity with my buddy there figuring since I lost an hours sleep because of the time change I had some catching up to do. on my way home I stopped at my local binnys and I found this innis & gunn gift pack with a glass that had three different oak aged beers on sale for 6.99 and was in the mood for something different. a Scottish beer aged on oak, same on rum and a bourbon aged stout which I am having tonight.
poured a nice reddish-brown color with a effervescent tan head that dissipates quickly with a light lacing left behind.
nose is pleasant with oak, vanilla, molasses, plum and some peat.
body is light for a stout, a little astringence from the oak, some roasted malt, plum, raisin and a touch of bourbon heat. finish is fairly smooth and a bit dry.
if you can find the gift pack it is worth the purchase to try a few different things. pretty enjoyable overall.
    cheers

    Howdy NBSers!

Just finished up my homework for the night, and that means that it is time for some new brews! I have two for you guys tonight, so let's get started! My first one is called Boulder Bend Dunkelweizen by Fish Brewing Company, but the name on the bottle is Leavenworth Biers. I have to say that the profile to this one is not that of a dunkelweizen in my opinion. Here's what I thought of it:

This brew pours a hazy cola color with a finger and a half length tan head that dissipates into a ring around the glass. It had aromas of milk chocolate, licorice and bubblegum. Taste is sweet and yeasty, but it seems very muted and bland. The carbonation is very high, and the mouthfeel is slightly creamy. There is this fruity (apple and pear?) aftertaste that is mixed with milk chocolate that isn't as bad as it sounds, and it lingers for a short while.

Now while it isn't offensive in my opinion, I can't help but feel that this just misses the mark badly. I think it's a hybrid of a sweet stout and a dunkelweizen (much more the former). My buddy brewed a dunkelweisen that was much more to style than this, and not only is he an amateur, but he is a noob! I will easily go through my other bottles, but I'm disappointed that it isn't the dunkelweisen I was hoping for. I guess the search for a solid American brewed dunkelweizen continues...

Oh brother life can be so hard sometimes. I'll be back shortly with new brew number two.

To even out the playing field in my softball league, these are the rules we play by...

I'm back with brew number two, which is the one, the only, Anchor IPA! This brew just came into the bottle shop I work at, and it costs only $8 for a six pack. In Illinois! HOLY CANOLI! Here's the low down on this bad boy:

Pours a beautiful amber color with a dense two fingers of white head that dissipates slowly into a cap that leaves tremendous lacing on the glass. There is a small amount of visible carbonation. Aromas are all very stereotypical of the hoppy brews on the market, except they are all combined. I think the dominant aroma is resin, but grapefruit, pine, citrus, and grape Starburst are all making their presence felt. By the way, I hate grape Starbursts very much, but I think they fit very well in the aroma. The bitterness in the tongue is a slap in the face, but there is a noticeable amount of sweetness in the middle. The hop resin aftertaste lingers, and I believe that my palate is completely destroyed. The carbonation level is decently low on this one, and for 6.5%, this is really light and refreshing (that is, if you find extreme bitterness sessionable, which I do).

Overall, I think this is a tremendous beer for hopheads, which is what I am. This is one that should be on all you NBSers' radars!

I believe it's time for me to play a tune...

    ISO: Lucky Lager:wink:

    Have a great week everyone!
    Cheers!

    New Milk Stout Sunday
    Lugene by Odell

Almost didn't jump in today. I'd made all sorts of plans to have an epic day of drinking new beers, and picked up about three or four at the store yesterday to sample. Then last night happened, and I spent all of today reconsidering the choices I make, and the thought of putting more alcohol INTO me was... not so appealing. Spring Break, wooo11!!!1!!
But then I spent the last hour or so laying in bed unable to get to sleep, so I figured I'd hop up and make a cup of tea. Which then became pouring a beer.

I love milk stouts, and I have learned to trust and respect Odell's offerings thusfar, so I was pretty excited when I saw it at the store. It does not disappoint. smoothe and creamy, black and beautiful, other things coupled by the word and... This is one hell of a beer. Drink it. Enjoy it. Repeat.
