    Greetings NBS-ers!

The weather seems to be subsiding a tad though we did have a light dusting of snow last night. The sun is out and shining and trying to tell Old Man Winter to take a hike until next year.

It would be easy for me to hype up the awesome Tripel I had yesterday or Stochasticity from a growler this past week but I gotta keep it local.

I had just finished my meds from my concussion and a friend brought this over.

Here's the latest from Alaskan Brewing Company.

Part of their Rough Draft Series. This is an AIPA made with pilsner malts. I liked it a lot.

Ive been chasing this beer for 2 years now, and it finally came. Rivertown Ville de Rivera.

The nose holds huge lactic acid, tart green grapes, and a touch of funk. Taste isnt as sour as the nose, but I like it. Still has nice acidity and tartness, a little grainy, and a little sweetness from the Lambic that was aged in Port barrels. Finish is long, reminds me of a Belgiam Gueuze. Up there with the big boys if you ask me.

The brunch has been had, the Mr. Peabody movie has been watched and now it is time to engage the new beer Sunday. The never ending winter hits us with another below freezing day. A DIPA you say? Don't mind if I do.

This beer pours with a generous head, and the traditional DIPA color. Smell is very sweet, got a lot of honey upfront.

Taste is a big hop explosion, that fades into a caramel and peppery finish. Not my favorite DIPA, but certainly more enjoyable than a black hole. I think Sherman would approve.

    One pour no fuss.

I'm a huge Southern Tier fan! Been to the brewery a few times. This is a good one, it's in the SuperPack that I pick up occasionally. If you're in northeastern Ohio (Cleveland-ish) then you're only a few hours from there

OK so 5 hours later I made it through all four and am still sober(!)
It turns out I had previously tried Too (though three years ago) and didn't update my review today though I wasn't quite as in love with it as I was then. My formal reviews are in each beer's page but here are my overall thoughts and a ranking:
    1. Fore. My favorite today, as luck would have it I saved the best for last going through these 1-4 in order. Nothing particularly earth shattering but quite tasty, everything that makes a good stout and the smoke addition were all in balance.
2/3. Kind of a tie between Too and Tres. I really liked the blueberry/coffee duet going on in Tres... not a common pairing but quite delicious. But I didn't pick up much in the beer besides those two components. The Too was also a solid stout though I always enjoy comparing my palate to previous notes and this is one of the few beers (whether it's the beer or me) I didn't like as much the second time around.
    4. One. I loved the nose but with every sip as soon as I swallowed it my palate was left with nothing but flavorless bitterness, not entirely pleasant.
Overall still a very enjoyable and educational tasting- I kind of thought all of these would be different themes on the same base but each was very much its own unique brew.
    Cheers!

I love Unearhtly and I also buy the super pack to which @stingley refers. It has unearthly, iniquity and 2XIPA in it. Nice little case that =)

    Howdy NBSers!

I just got home from my buddy's house where we smoked some corned beef and chowed down like there was no tomorrow! To add to that, we split a real gem of a beer. The beer is called Beer Geek Brunch Weasel by Mikkeller, and here's what I thought of it:

Pours black with a half a finger of creamy tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a good amount of lacing. The smell was of alcohol, dark chocolate and light coffee. I was not a fan of the nose. The taste, on the other hand, was incredible! Very roasty and bitter, and it finished up with a touch of sweetness. No alcohol detected on the tongue as well. The aftertaste of coffee and Hershey's chocolate syrup lingered for a long while. It was like drinking chocolate syrup as well as tasting like it.

I personally enjoyed it, but my buddy seemed to be going bananas over it, for what that's worth. He's an imperial stout guy and I'm not. It's definitely a beer worth getting once in a blue moon.

    I believe it's about time I played a tune...

The little lady and I are about to split something new to us both. What is it, you ask? Well, you'll just have to stay tuned to find out.

Busy NBS today! I'm opening up another Drie Fonteinen, this time the 'standard' Oude Geuze.

I have to say, this is a huge letdown after the Golden Blend (which blew me away). There's a kind of earthy/dirty/smokey component to the funkiness that just doesn't do it for me. 3.85 / -12.1%

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2216/6305/?ba=Roguer

On the flip side, while highly carbonated, at least this one didn't nearly take out my eye. Maybe it was just a poor bottle, or maybe it's my palate, or the setting. Regardless, I'm just not feeling this one as much as I'd hoped. Well, it's low ABV, and I can always follow up with something else.

    Cheers!

I personally absolutely loved Beer Geek Brunch Weasel; I liked it a lot more than Beer Geek Breakfast. It's definitely all about how it compares to other imperial stouts, that's for sure. Super complex, yet delicate and balanced.

Looking forward to the next brew!

Only other sour I have ever had is Monks Cafe. Really enjoyed this one, there was a bit of funk on the nose, but almost in the taste, just loads of tart cherries, a hint of raspberry, and puckeringly sour. Really enjoyed.

    Greetings All:

Sam Adams Maple Pecan Porter. Part of the Spring Variety pack. Not a bad brew, but I'm not sure how much of a spring seasonal it might be.

    New Baltic Porter Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Best wishes to the @DIM family and happy to be joining @utopiajane with a Jack's Abby brew this week.

Looks like an action packed day here on the finest thread in the land of BA. Can't wait to go back and read all the good stuff sampled.

Southern CT experienced a great weekend. Typical late winter chill but bright sunny skies so I won't be complaining.

Family time, chores, hiking, and all that good stuff this weekend. Our 21 mo. old daughter has the sniffles today so this is the first I've been able to break away for a few minutes to sample the NB for S.

A darn good beer and quickly becoming one of my favorite breweries. Perhaps a trip there over the summer will be in order:

A 2nd review for NBS! and it's New Saison Sunday

Acquired this 375ml bottle from a single-day release at the brewery for Hunahpu's Hangover Day on March 9, 2014. Poured into a tall pilsner glass.

A: Pours a cloudy, tangerine orange, brighter and more straw-like toward the edges. Big white head subsides quickly and sticks around throughout, but no lacing at all.

S: Immediately I think "yeast," followed by lemon citric tang, and a not terribly unpleasant soapy aroma.

T/M: Tastes a lot better than the nose would have you imagine, all lemon tang, sweet kumquat fruit, and a delightful grain base. Gets a bit sweeter as it warms, very nicely balanced farmhouse. Carbonation approaches an almost intense level, but is restrained enough to be just right for the style.

O: A nice effort by the fine fellows at 7venth Sun. They had me at "kumquat saison," and the beer thankfully is more than solid. Not sure if they ever have plans to brew/bottle it again, but it may be worth seeking out for those who enjoy a fruited take on a saison.

    hey NBSers,
good to see that all our well and recovered from previous trials and tribulations. weather here was back in the tweens but a brighter forecast lies ahead this week. completed an IP trade this week with someone in town from new york and this was one of the extras, and since i had never tried it before i decided to save it for new beer sunday.

easy pour into a 12 oz glass, hazey pale golden color, 0ne finger head with nice lacing. aromas of pine, citrus and some cut grass. upfront piney taste with a some grapefruit, lemon rind, with a slightly sweet malt bill and mildly bitter dry finish. medium body with a nice resiny aftertaste.

cheers and happy st. pats day to all

    New American Black Ale Sunday

Hello all! Still cold here in Wisconsin. Well, I took another break from reviewing Wisconsin brews to try a variety pack of hoppy brews from Sierra Nevada. I had already tried the enjoyable Torpedo. Today's brew was the Blindfold IPA. I agree with the style being called as it is here "American Black Ale" as it is certainly not "Pale", making IPA not fit. BUT, that's a discussion for another post. Anyway, I was very pleased with it. I've had brews of this style in which the roast clashes with the hop bitterness. It doesn't here, making for a deliciously well-rounded brew. Hops still stand out while leaving the dark malt to participate in the fun of the flavor. A very enjoyable brew!
