guiness is watery, lacking big flavor, lacking ABV. its made to drink in mass quantities. and thats exactly when i reach for it. if im at the pub and gonna watch a couple games and be there 5-6 hrs...this is my go to. serves a purpose for me.

Huh, the one I had yesterday was 6% and full of great body -- oh, I see -- you're talking about the Guinness Draught!

It was born in Ireland and still brewed in Ireland. Why does it matter where the pencil pushers sit?

Not really, people drink lots of things. Students, of which I am one, will drink anything really...Corona, Budweiser, Heneiken, pretty much any 'standard' beers. Of course students will drink Guinness too and it's certainly not more bud light than anything. People who are a bit older, will almost exclusively drink Guinness if they are in a pub.

Your perception is being altered by spending too much time on this website. It actually is cool to like Guinness. I think that most people would say that those who don't like Guinness are the uncool ones.

I enjoy Guinness from time to time still but was extremely disappointed to find out they put high fructose corn syrup in it.

Anyone remember Caffrey's Cream Ale? That was good Irish beer. It was available in the states for about 5 minutes I think.

It was an interesting read, and it came as no surprise to me that where Guinness is "based" today and its connection to Ireland today is based very largely on marketing. In that regard, and in regard to its ubiquity and use of adjuncts, it is the BMC of the stout world in my mind, as well. Sure, it's a hell of a lot better than Bud Light, but for a stout, it's weak, watery and lacks the flavor and body of any number of better stouts. I won't be drinking it today, not because of its dubious connection to Irish culture, but because there are hundreds of better stouts available, many with a similarly low ABV suitable to sessioning.

This is what we found as well. However, when we traveled out to the smaller more rural areas, it was all Guinness and Smithwick's. One very small pub wouldn't serve Guinness to women because there "Guinness is for the men...women drink Smithwick's." Got that "Blues Brothers in a cowboy bar feeling" there.

I'll be drinking some Murphy's this evening, because Moylan's Dry Irish Stout would run me $5/ bomber and Murphy's is 6.99 for a 4-pack.

But I have no problems with Guiness. It has been very good to me over the years.

And the fact that's it's got a low abv prevented me from getting too sh*t-faced in my younger days when I thought I was pounding really heavy dark beer.

Just wondered about your "purpose" in "avoiding Guinness as much as possible." Most of the Guinness-bashing seems to be rooted in it not being Irish or being a "macro." The Lager and Irish Red would be from same conglomo macro.

And Murphy's, FWIW is just from a different conglomo macro -- and to be honest, I wonder if the average ticker could really tell the difference between Murphy's Draught and Guinness Draught. There was a blog article a few years back where 5 or 6 Irish beer lovers gathered at O'Neill's in Dublin to blind-taste Guinness, Murphy's, and Beamish. One of the bunch was able to correctly identify all 3. I'll see if I can find the blog...

It's a silly argument in my opinion. We should be more worried about the beers trying to pass themselves off as "craft" than whether Guinness has enough Irish in it to be called Irish. We all know the Guinness history, it's good enough for me.

I too get enjoyment from Beamish when ever found. I even found it in Santiago, Cl as a welcome change from Quilmes and Cristal.

All this talk of Guinness really makes me want a pint of Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

Don't forget O'Hara's -- a quite good "alternative" to Guinness, and I think asterisk-free (at least, the last I looked -- could have changed last night!).
