I'm seeing a ton of extremely highly rated beers from TG. Having no access to it other than trade I'm wondering if they are really that awesome or is it due to the relative few number of ratings they have this far?

They really are spectacular. One of the stars of EBF this weekend

Every beer that's highly rated from TG is absolutely fantastic and near the top of its respective style. The only mediocre beer I've had from them is Dorothy's New World Lager, which, from someone who loves lagers, was definitely a letdown (I have heard negative things about some of the X-Hops series, though). Believe the hype.

I had pseudoSue,Zeelander and the Rainbow label XHOPS extremely fresh just the other day and I thought pseudoSue and Zeelander were ridiculously good and the XHOPS though not as good as the other two was still solid.

You want spectacular try all their stouts (KBBS, Morning Delight and Assassin) but their year round offerings are all at the top of the styles.

    Believe the hype.

You're probably right about Dorothy's. It's a very old recipe, before Mike arrived I believe, and is a very good seller in bars where people are not craft beer drinkers or are just getting started with craft beer. It's understandable that they keep it in the lineup.

The Xhops are a wild story. They are all brewed with the same base beer and dry hopped with a different experimental hop from the hop union. Other that the dry hopping, they're the same. It really does go to show how much difference the hop makes. They did what they wanted: tested the new rhizomes and got feedback for the formal descriptions. They didn't have a real choice in these varieties, so it's understandable that some are better than others. You're basically getting to try a test batch from a hop that nobody knew what it would do. For a true experiment, I thought they came out very well. Sure, I like some better than others, but that's what we expected. #TeamRed

On-topic, but separately: does anyone know if they have any military background? I've noticed a number of their beer names could be interpreted in rather specific ways. I've always been curious, but seen nothing on their site that suggests that in any way.

Super looking forward to trying Pseudo and King Sue eventually, though.

They have done 6 varieties of X-Hops, and I would say 3 were a success. Zeelander is great and PseudoSue is amazing! Within the last few short months it has been "easier" for the Iowans to grab a hold of bottles when they hit shelves, which is awesome news. I have never had a stout of theirs, but only hear great things. Hopefully will make it to the brewery in the near near future.

I like how PseudoSue gives a nod to all the meth people in Iowa.

They are amazing. I went to their taproom with the family (I'm originally from Iowa) last time I was home, and every beer I/we had was great. And Mornin' Delight was one of my favorites from EBF.

I was at the brewery last week & tried almost everything there & almost everything they do us at least solid.
Rainbow X Hops & Naughty 90 were solid but not great. Tsunami Pale, Rover Truck oatmeal stout, Smoove Operator Brown, Golden Nugget IPA were all really good.
I haven't tried PseudoSue or Zeelander yet but I have a growler of Sue & bottles of Zeelander left so next week I'll give them a shot

Do they distribute bottles? Or do you have to go to the taproom to buy them?

The self-distribute in Iowa and Wisconsin, with Minnesota coming soon. Pretty much at the brewery, IC/CR, Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and up as far as Madison, WI.

Believe the hype, man. Had King Sue and Mornin' Delight at EBF, absolutely blew me away. Mornin' Delight in particular was outstanding--tasted like pancakes drenched in maple syrup with a fresh cup of coffee on the side. Went back for seconds. Wish I could manage to secure more than 2oz of their beers. (...any Iowa BAs care to oblige?)
