This isn't a new story, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has experience with a beer-only fast or any fast that includes beer. I can't remember where I originally read about Jay Wilson's venture in 2011, but it inspired me. This will be my fourth year fasting from Thursday evening until Easter morning. Someday I would like to try an extended fast, but for now, roughly 60 hours is plenty. Definitely not trying to make this a religious conversation, as I don't do this as part of any "religious ritual". Just looking to hear about others' experiences and possible recommendations. Last year I went with Founders Breakfast Stout and Duck Rabbit Baltic Porter.

Never tried it. And since beer/food go hand in hand for me, I think it would be nigh on impossible for me. Good luck though dude!

Fasting for 60 hours? Damn, I'm in a tizzy when I miss a meal. A beer only fast? I'd be chewing my tongue and lips. But more power to ya if it's something you want to and can do.

There certainly is an initial "tizzy" by about noon on Friday. But if you can push through that it actually gets a bit euphoric. It is quite a shift to view beer as your food, rather than a complement to it.

That is crazy. Not saying I would try it, but can't really because of my job & length of drive to work. Ok, I might consider trying during a long weekend. I'll have to give it some thought.

Well, the legend is that German monks invented Bock beer as a way to provide more nourishment while fasting during Lent, so there's that.

Paulaner salvator was originally brewed for the Lenten fast the monks undertook. Doppelbock is what you seek my friend.

Yes, many Monks across the ages are said to have used beer as a way to maintain caloric/vitamin intake yet still not eat any "food" during their various fasting periods...

Nourishment. So that's what the kids called it back then. :grinning:

Good to know, as I already have some in the fridge:slight_smile: I also grabbed a few 16 oz. cans of Troegenator yesterday (how did I not know these existed before??) I've not done much research at all on the history of fasting as it pertains to specific styles. I've just kind of gone with the general rule of thumb that darker means more "nutrients", and thus chosen stouts and porters.

Consuming calories is hardly a real fast imo. If you are allowing calories, consuming the only two macronutrients your body physiologically needs zero of to survive seems like a foolish choice.

I'd do this. I usually do a 48 hour fast every spring. Extending with the help of beer may be do-able.

You're probably right, but I'm less interested in whether or not it's a real fast than I am about others' experiences with fasting that includes beer. For clarity's sake, I typically drink 3 beers spread throughout the day, with a few glasses of water also. I suppose fasting in and of itself seems like a foolish choice if you are strictly considering the physiology of it.

I agree with this. I don't think you can really be fasting while consuming calories. Fasting does the body a lot of harm and adding only alcohol to it just doesn't seem like a good choice for the body at all.

Good luck to you, OP. I know I couldn't fast for almost three days. Especially if I'm drinking. I would have to eat something after that.

Yeah same thing for me. Beer always go with food. I need food inside with beer

The only thing I'm less likely to give than beer would be food. Good luck to you though.

Yep, was trying to lose weight quickly and popped diet pills with beer only for a week. Not allowed in Home Depot anymore, but fortunately my favorite bar forgave me,... I think those monks must have had a simpler life to get away with it.

*Edit - I did lose 12 pounds in 8 days, the beginning of eventually (by healthier methods) losing 50 pounds that have stayed off for a year now,...

@Crusader made an interesting post here:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...its-on-ingredients.135628/page-2#post-2222524
regarding Salvator in 1853. The apparent attenuation was only 46% (insanely low)- which would leave plenty of carbohydrates remaining for the monks. The beer today is a different animal in that regard, but still a solid candidate.

Wow, I've got to admit I thought that was a joke at first. Glad to hear you are still welcome at your favorite bar. Hopefully there is a Lowe's nearby.
