Hi all, I’m pretty new to rating and reviewing beer although I’ve been consuming craft beer since the late 1980’s. I recently posted pretty bad a review of a highly rated beer (that I really wanted to love) and was subsequently contacted by the brewmaster of that particular brewery. He was very cordial and inquisitive about my uncommon experience with the beer in question, without being peevish.
My question is this: Have you ever written a review and then been contacted by the brewmaster for that brewery? If so, was it pleasant or disagreeable?
Personally, I found it a bit flattering. If he’d been more peevish, I’d have probably been bummed.

That's great. I don't review, so can't add much, but I think this is really cool.

The only interaction I've ever had with a brewmaster online was initiated by me, and he was a big time d-bag. I started out being nice, but ended up being a d-bag back. I would say he lost a customer with his attitude, but his beer sucks anyway so I probably wouldn't be a customer if he was nice. I will take a bit of cruel pleasure when his brewery is out of business in a few years because he is too dumb to listen to people who buy his product.

I'm curious what brewery you interacted with.

If I were a brewmaster I would be using this site to garner feedback and inquire what exactly the consumer didn't like. They could be trying to find out if bad batch or just an overall feedback on how to possibly tweak to make beer more enjoyable.

I've had a couple of brewmasters send beermail based on a review I did. One good and one bad. In both cases they were very cool in their messages.

I'm just impressed that they looked at the review and cared to reply.

I don't have this experience. But curious what you'd define as "pretty bad" in terms of reviews. Was it just a low subjective number? Or some scathing comments about the beer? I'd assume more of the former based on the brewmaster's reaction, but I think a lot of those reactions really do depend on how it's framed. I've had several beers that haven't lived up to their high rating and have seen low reviews of beers I hold in high regard. Most are probably ignored, but I bet with certain words, a lot of notable breweries might react (both positively and negatively).

I would feel special. I mean that's from them to you. No matter what the tone, it's personal. Whatever you did , they took notice. Congrats.

Yes... and the experience has been one of positive, and other times (although rarely) negative.

I'm curious about what specifically the brewmaster asked you about. Clearly if you wrote a general "get this done quickly so it counts" review, you wouldn't have been given the time of day. And if you gave a proper review wouldn't you have already mentioned exactly what you didn't like about the beer?

It's still flattering IMO and I'm happy to hear the person was cool. Good stuff.

I had some as well, which turn into an invite. met many owners/brewmasters and consider some friends. they are generally pretty cool, but there are the occassional jerks. any of them that tell you they dont look at reviews are probably not speaking the truth. this is a treasurw trove of info.

I posted something here once, and was contacted by not the brewmaster, but the co owner of said brewery.

Invited me to the brewery to open another bottle, and show me otherwise.

Turned out, he didn't think there was much of an issue with the beer's carbonation, but noted that they used the wrong size corks. He poured me a 8 ounce pour of the bottle, and left it at that, attempting to show it was carbonated still. It wasn't, but the fact they went to capped bottles for every release after that, shows there was an issue I believe.

Regardless, it was cordial, and I think everyone learned something. I love the brewery, the head brewer is a really nice guy, and great staff at the bar. Only downside is, I try and be nice and friendly with the owner and he's just a bit smug at times, but I know he's got alot going on, and wears a ton of hats around the place, so hey..

The brewmaster asked where and when the beer was purchased and if it had any date code or something to identify the batch. He seemed to be more interested in why I thought my experience was so vastly different from other’s experiences. I think my mention of the smell/flavor reminding me of cat pee might have been the catalyst for a response. Particularly, since I mentioned that I enjoy many of that brewery’s other styles.

Yes. Fisherman's Brew wrote me to say thanks for my reviews...even though they weren't quite positive. I've always remembered it and intend to visit them if ever in the area.

I have actually had contact with 3 brewmasters because of things I have said on BA. Only one from a little known brewery in central Indiana was a toolbox.
