Anyone here ever get about 6 months into rating beers on this site and then thinking...maybe my scale needs to be re-calibrated...I am looking at some beers i have rated 3.5-4.0 and I would consider them to be decent to pretty good but I am not sure if 3.5 - 4.0 is too high for that...i think it is. Anyways - I was just thinking about going through and re-calibrating everything this weekend but wanted to see if other have done the same. cheers!

I only re-rank beers after I've been drinking numerous beers.

There is a wavelike effect in ratings I feel. Some periods of time go by where we are more critical and/or wanting more out of our beer and scores are lower and other times we just get a good impression going for each beer we are into at the moment. Therefore, it seems harmless to go back and re-calibrate your ratings if you feel up to it just to tune things up.

If I didn't like a beer previously, I will occasionally re-rate it if I try it again and enjoy it much more on the second go. I should probably be consistent and re-rate beers I like much less on a second try.

If I am drinking a beer and on the computer, I will always update a review when appropriate. Just did so tonight in fact.

I've only been reviewing for a few months but I have adjusted on occasion. If a later tasting significantly changes my impression of a particular characteristic I feel it makes sense to adjust accordingly.

Bourbon County was my 1st barrel aged stout and I was simply amazed. Gave it a 5 without a hesitation. After having Parabola and KBS, I found were much more well crafted and had to drop my rating. Blind taste test with all three. BCBS came in 3rd with all three tasters that participated.

I tend not to, because I know that my palate has changed, and will probably continue to change. I have done it with a few really early ratings, but that's it.

If people can take a sip and feel free to throw down a 5 on this site, I will re-rate all I want. The Bros have made it that it does not really matter. Do what you like.

On a more respectful note. I often revisit beers, and adjust my score. Maybe my palate was off, maybe the beer was old or got a bad poor, maybe I just changed. My scores and the beer are not set in stone.

I don't like second guessing my original review...to many outside factors can change my perception without actually changing anything else? Re-review them if you think your buds have changed or matured and add that note to your new review.

I have changed a few within days of original review only because I had more of the same beer and came to a larger conclusion...six months seems like a re-review to me? Re-calibrating without tasting and taking notes seems a little odd to me but to each his own

I'm a noob BA member and a 40 year veteran of beer drinking. I've adjusted slightly up and down for temperature differences on a few beers since joining. I read and learned why the tastes changed. Like my grandaddy told me, "If you learned something today, it was a great day Johnny." To me cheap beer always tasted the same weather it was warm or cold.

I update my reviews sometimes. Like when the original tasting led me to suspect the beer was old or not stored well. I am also quite surprised when I agree with a review from many years ago.

I find that my understanding of what is a bad-ass beer has changed much over the last few years. Things I might have given a 5 in 2012 might really be closer to a 4 (or even less) these days.

Case in point, the first time I had Stone RIS I thought it was amazing. Now, I wouldn't use it in a bidet for my ass. Same goes for Old Rasputin. It used to be my go-to; now I could give two shits. There is better stuff at the grocery store, for Chrissake...

I did go back and lower those ratings, just to allow more headroom for the Founders and Ten Fidys of the world. Apologies if you actually like Stone or Old Raspy. You will transcend eventually. :grinning:

No, I never have retroactively gone back and changed ratings. However, I do frequently change values right after I post a review if I notice things developing in the beer I am currently drinking. Lots of things can change as the beer warms up and whatnot.

You can never recapture your innocence. I am sure that when I first started rating beer, I rated many too high. I am also sure that because I was new to the idea of style, I rated many good beers too low. My unwritten rule is as long as the beer is still in the glass I will edit my review. ( Or drinking from the same six pack) Once the beer is gone, that's it. No more tweaking.

Sounds like there is some disparity in opinion here....I think I am going to allow myself to rerate some beers now and then stick to my ratings going forward.

I'm with certain others who will re-rate a beer, although I am very loath to do so. There are some circumstances where I will totally re-rate a beer: an old bottle, an off bottle, infection, etc.

Where it gets muddier is if my experience changes my perception, or if I rated on a fatigued palate. Above all, I'm shooting for fairness or accuracy. I try to rate both to style and my palate, and both are subject to change (one by greater experience with the style, the other by greater overall experience).

In some cases, after I've had a beer multiple times, I realize my first review may have been a tad harsh, so I may revisit it (for this reason, if I buy a 4 or 6 pack, I very, very rarely give a review to the first beer from the pack).

Other times, I find that once I've tried other beers within the style, I find it may not actually be all that impressive of an example, and I may revisit it again.

One thing I will not do is adjust a score on memory alone ("Oh, man, now that I think about it, maybe I did smell cat pee on that beer 10 months ago!") I've got to honestly revisit the beer, in a glass, and see if I'm picking up new flavors, or new experiences, or if I can just better place the beer in context now.

Examples: Over the last several months, I rated Sucks and Gandhi-Bot higher than my initial rating, one I'd had more than one bottle/can, and had more world-class DIPAs. Turns out they rank up there pretty well, and better than my (at-the-time) inexperienced palate could really appreciate.

Separately, I just went back and gave Torpedo a more accurate (to me) review, which resulted in a slightly lower score (not significantly, but slightly). When I first had Torpedo, it was back in the infancy of my IPA drinking. Now I'm not completely floored by it, because I have had other beers that do what it does. Different hop profiles, IBU levels, hop aromas and flavors, malt varieties, etc.

Short answer: yes, but only if I feel there's a good reason, and only if I have the beer in my glass to give it an honest look.

I'm a longtime lurker, but pretty new rater. I have "re calibrated" my ratings a few times already. I feel that my palate has changed significantly over time, and that needs to be reflected in the rating and/or review. I have actually revisited two specific beers more than once raising one and lowering the other. I know of another that I should go and re-rate, as my rating was punishing and I KNOW it was just a bad bottle, it just had to be.

Trying new beers brings new perspective, ratings should be fluid.

I just adjusted my Dirtwolf score from 4.16 to 4.64. It seemed better (more juicy and grapefruit) the second time I had it (about a month had passed).
