I will be headed to Charleston, SC for my honeymoon SUnday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 9. I have researched a little on the breweries to visit and came up with the following list: Coast Brewing Westbrook Brewing Holy City Brewing Frothy Beard Brewing Is it worthwhile to throw down for the Brews Cruise or is going it on our own a better bet? Also, can anyone suggest some good beer bars, pubs or taverns? Thanks!
Beer tours are good (if they're available while you're visiting), but if you'd like to get around at your own pace, it's better to just go it alone. And Charleston's such a great place you'll want to get off on your own. Unfortunately, a lot of breweries won't be open during your visit. COAST will be closed during your visit, but Westbrook will open Tuesday and Wednesday; Frothy Beard will be open Sunday and Wednesday; and Holy City will be open all week. Tradesmen will be opening this weekend but it's not clear whether they'll be open while you're visiting, and Freehouse won't be open during your trip. As far as other places to check out, Closed for Business, House of Brews, Oak Barrel, Craftsmen, Bohemian Bull and Coleman Public House are all great. And don't listen to @marleyr's nay-saying. Edmund's Oast is a great spot for beer and food. You can find their beer list and menu at http://edmundsoast.com/ You can find anything you want to know about beer, breweries and beer spots at http://chsbeer.org/. Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your trip!
@nickmcc their food is over priced and you get very little of it. Nothing's worse that living a restaraunt with $100+ tab and an empty stomach. C'mon! Stop advertising for them!
I'm not advertising for anybody. He's certainly welcome to go or not. Doesn't bother me, but I've heard from a lot more people who had a great experience than from those who didn't. And what better excuse to maybe splurge a little than on your honeymoon?
Yes, definitely go to Edmunds Oast. Their beer selection is second to none and the house made brews are great.
Yeah we will be open at Westbrook and Tuesdays we have been putting on a special keg, nothing rare, just special treatments. Last week was pineapple salsa IPA (our IPA with fresh pineapple, cilantro and jalapeƱos added). This weeks is orange cream Frickle (named after an employee who thought it up, it's our one claw rye pale ale with fresh oranges and vanilla beans). Not sure what next weeks will be.
Yeah not trying to downplay edmunds because they do have a killer beer list, but if I was on my honeymoon there are better places I would go eat.
In a city full of fantastic restaurants I ate at Edmunds three times in four days over Brewvival weekend, and never once did I leave thinking I hadn't gotten my dollar's worth. It's definitely not a place to go if you want cheap terrible bar food though. Best advice though: Take a look at the menu and decide for yourself, don't let random people on the Internet tell you where to go.
Kevin what I meant was more that their menu isn't very charleston/low country. If I was visiting here on a honeymoon and didn't live here I would want quintessential charleston food and EO doesn't do that. Not saying they don't have good food, more the style of food wouldn't be what I was looking for personally.
I think you go to Edmunds Oast for the Bar menu. If you eat, that's fine, and the food's pretty good. But you're simply not going to find those beers anywhere else in Charleston. Go grab a Bo and Luke or a BA Blackbeerd or a Mr. Chipper and either eat or don't. That's my suggestion.
I think you haven't dined much downtown. Their food is wonderful, and the prices are on par with most fine dining in the peninsula. I love the Moose, but it is not even close to the level of the food at the Oast. If you are dining on the cheap, hit up some charcuterie and a burger. The burger there is tops. It is completely misleading to tell someone visiting not to dine there because you don't like the prices. On a forum full of people paying $25+ for a 750ml bottle of beer, I am sure $25 for a high quality main course is not really a big deal.
Tradesman Brewing will be open Tuesday through Friday from 4:30-7:30pm. More details can be found on their FB page. They just opened this past weekend and the brews are quite tasty (plus it's on the way out to Folly Beach)!
