I have never seen this being done. In fact, when I first started going to capones, he would always throw me a can of a local new brewery, a special half acre release, etc for FREE (and he still continues to do this)! Just so I could try the new beers/breweries if I was on the fence about them. I've had nothing but positive experiences there and with the group running the shop

Good for you. It happened and it went on for quite awhile. There are many people on this site that can confirm this.

I guess I've never seen it. Wasn't trying to say what you said was not true, just providing my experience as a customer there

This kind of reads like a personal vendetta. I've never been to capones but I always see them posting about tastings that are brewery exclusives from out of state. I think that's pretty cool.

Agree to disagree. My major point is I just hate people complaining constantly on here about not getting a new hot release. If you don't get a 4 pack of KBS life will go on. Like you said even tons of restaurants get bottles and it will be on tap. I don't want to sidetrack here too much, these threads where people only complain just make my head hurt. Beer is awesome and at its core should be fun.

    Guys
This thread has been hashed over time after time(occasionally by me). The buy 4pack of IS to get a KBS is questionable. And they apparently have changed alot in the past few years(from what I hear). Some of us love Capone's and some of us just never want to give them our business for shady tactics in the past. Let's just drop it.

I don't have a problem with only getting the special release if you buy X, I just wish it was any (or a select few) 4-pack/6-pack of the same brand. My issue is that I never want what they've attached it to or already have too much of it.

Capone's has been pretty decent to me. Freddy split up 2 x 6-packs of Spiteful for me when I couldn't decide which to try. I'm not the biggest regular in there but he always gives me one of whatever I'm looking for that they don't put on the shelf. Plus, they had $10.99 sixers of fresh Sculpin cans in there for awhile. There was so much of it that I'm sure it's all that December stock still in there. To corroborate the pricing issue, they did list Zombie Dust at $12.99 on beermenus for awhile when they were really charging $13.99. They've corrected that though.

I will say that I don't like that you don't get an itemized receipt, because I can't see things ring up on that register and there have been a couple of questionable totals on things before. Probably legit, but my mind couldn't make sense of it.

Wanna talk douchy? Extra Value Wine & Liquors has a Parabola taped together with 2 x 4-packs of Double Jack (knowing them it is probably not fresh) for $50! For reference their DJ is listed for $7.99 on beermenus. So... that's $34 for that Parabola.

That would be a bomber of double jack for $7.99. A 4-pack of double jack is not sold for $7.99, unless its 50% off day.

So the parabola is really only $20. . . I would buy that package in a heartbeat if I saw it (IF the DJ was fresh, only if). Not a bad deal at all considering parabola is not easy to find this year.

Oh shit, you're right. Looks like $12.99 is typical. So $24 Parabola.

I still bet the DJ is 6 months old.

There's something to be said of the fact that Capone's come up a lot when discussing 'shady' liquors stores in Chicago.

Wow, there is something about Capone's that people just love or hate. But the same goes for everywhere. Buying a 4-pk isnt asking alot, honestly. Prestige Liquors on Mannheim was forcing people to buy a Founders 12 pk cans just to buy a single $9 KBS. They justified it by saying the 12 pack was a dollar less than Binny's. Foremost out in the burbs had BCBS varients this year wrapped together with GI sisters beers and wouldnt sell them alone but no one ever starts entire threads to complain about them.

Actually, everyone complains about everything, always...

In fact, I recall an exact thread complaining about some liquor store in the suburbs forcing customers to buy one of the GI sisters in order to get a BC variant. Just can't remember which store it was.

I'm going to go into Capones and ask to use the restroom. I know there's one there. If he lets me use it, he's a good guy and he can charge what he wants with whatever scheme he chooses. If he denies me and looks at me funny, his place sucks.

I'll let you guys know what happens.

Right there with you my friend. I also love complaining about complaining....ha.

Well on a positive note. Clark street ale house has Baudonia on tap right now for $7 for a 12 oz pour.

Waffles if he asks you, "no. 1 or no. 2?"

Also, I don't think Freddy works Wednesdays.

What I hate about this, is if they're successful with this Buy a 4 pack to buy 1 KBS, I would assume it will carryover to something like Buy a 6 pack of Third Coast Old Ale to be able to buy 1 Black Note, next week.

Or buy a 6 pack of Bell's Christmas Ale to buy 1 BN. Now that would be the worst!!!

Wow a "I hate Capones" thread on BA, Talk about big time. A store named after the most notorious criminal of our time has a rep of Shadiness? Really...

Pulling what he did is not uncommon, but a lot of us put him on the level of Beer Temple, WLV and Fischman's.

The above store's go out of their way to build a rep and set out practices that supports the community. Be it tastings, holding events and sharing the wealth. Kristina will share her last bit of Pappy with a Stranger, Chris and Gus hold events for Charity. All three of them sell rare bottles and cellar bottles to sell at a later date with little or no mark up.

Us beer geeks really are a bunch of whinny little girls when it comes to beer and the places we shop at. What to you expect, it's our hobbies and we are passionate about what we collect, consume and the places we consider ourselves regulars at.

Capones simply can't compete with the above stores due to past and present practices. In the end who cares, He will continue taking care of his regulars, get as much as he can out of special releases and sell cheap booze and Miller Lite to passer by's.

We will continue to support legit new stores like Bottles and Can's and the Beer Cellar, line up in front of a random Binny's in below zero weather and trade wales for minnows simply because we remember back when we started

The Chicago Beer scene is better then a thread complaining about one store that handled a release poorly, we really should put the effort into prompting the good experiences and great people we meet.
