Don't get me wrong. I'm Newcastle fan. It's always an option when I go out.
I did not know the history of caramel coloring in British beers. I sincerely thank you. But, has it always been the coloring where ammonia is used in the process? Aren't there other ways to acheive that golden brown color; even with caramel?

I never knew that ammonia was used in caramel making , it's only burnt sugar after all.Caramel is used routinely throughout the drinks industry for adjusting colour.
I'm amazed why they think that there really is that much difference between the breweries in production methods rendering some "safe" and others to be avoided.
As for high fructose syrup , that's just food for the yeast. It won't be in the finished beer.

Very true. Most organic beers that I have tried are not up to par with non-organic beers. I have tried several that are good, Sam Smith's Chocolate Stout, Organic Ale and Lager are great, Eel River's Raven's Eye Imperial Stout, and I also enjoy Uinta's Baba Black Lager and Monkshine and Pinkus Ur Pils is good.

Damn, those are my favorites. Dogfish Bladder Entrail Stout is all natural, like liquid haggis- a good purgative for sure.

I've seen this "article" pop up every now and then over the past couple of months. It is just a watered down version that has been copy-pasted numerous times on natural-food/vegan/hippy blogs.

The original article is actually a bit more in-depth, but still only concentrates on those 8 beers

Not for the making of caramel; but caramel coloring, a food additive. They use it in a lot of colas. I am not quite sure exactly how ammonia fits in to the manufacturing process of the coloring. That's why I was disappointed. It's one thing to get yummy burnt sugar caramel, quite another to find out it's coloring. Anyone care to enlighten?

Any page that has a link to an article about chemtrails on the sidebar does not contain "good info".

As I will go on making them. I use a teaspoon of rehydrated Irish Moss in 5+ gallons of beer. It settles out into the trub, as that's its function. I'll take my chances with the trace amounts left after racking.

I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED that there are artificial ingredients in mainstream beers!

I've made a shocking discovery, friends, that you all must pay attention to immediately, if you care about your health. Almost all beers, with very few exceptions, contain ethanol, a substance linked to altered mental states and increased risk of colon cancer. If you care about your health, AVOID ALL BEERS CONTAINING ETHANOL!

If ever I've seen slanted reporting, this is it. I hope that site doesn't have a A+ rating with their regular readers because they just went from that grade to an F in my mind. It's quackery.

Their repeated complaint about the use of the corn syrup in beer seems to ignore that a chemical reaction takes place when brewing, namely fermentation. And another chemical gets produced from that process, namely alcohol, for which they had no mention in the article as being bad for you?!! (Well, beyond moderation, at least.)

This article strikes me as just somebody who doesn't get good happy feelings when there's anything that sounds sciency in the ingredient list, and rationalizes this lack of good happy feelings by exaggerating the extent of health risks that we all pretty much already knew anyway and that are either unproven or pale in comparison to the known health risks of alcohol.

I don't like some of the comments at the bottom either though, they strike me as equally smug and obnoxious in the other direction.
