Found an article (courtesy of a BA thread) and was just browsing the comments section on the website. It might sound a little out of context, but I didn't want to spin this conversation in that particular direction... Instead, I want to focus on a specific reply I read. It reads:

"I find it comical that all the beer nerds are so offended by mentioning Coors Light. I mean, props to you if you don't ever find yourselves in a quantity over quality situation, or can afford craft beer every time you're thirsty. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE craft brews, and have long before it became as big a thing (since around 1999 I would guess). Was out on the town this past Saturday night and ended up at a place with Founders porter on tap, which is unbelievably good in my opinion. But I'm not going to drink a stout or porter or IPA very often in the summer outside. Cheap canned beer can be perfect in these situations. That's why you all can be funny. I feel like taste and flavor preference are subjective enough that no beer nerd needs to scoff at others' choices of what works for them. Otherwise you sound like those rich kids gettin on the poor ones for wearing off-brand clothes. Sure, your preferences and tastes are of a slightly higher quality, but that doesn't mean as much to some people, or they can't afford the craft beer habit as often as they like to drink. Let em live. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers included Coors for the sole purpose of working @craftnationisbetterthanyou into a frenzy."

I find people like this ridiculous. And frankly, sounds like he is confusing the "beer geek" with the beer snob. I'm just sort a tired of those who don't feel as passionate about certain things to feel the need to shoot those who do.--Especially when fellow beer geeks aren't the snob types. He makes some good points, but he makes little jabs here and there. And personally, I didn't see any beer geek in the article being "worked in to a frenzy" or getting offended by the article. No, the only thing that offended me, wasn't that people like this guy can enjoy a Coors... but he felt the need to label us all as snobs or elitists. Is this the norm??

Also, can someone please explain to me why on a nice, summers day... a good stout or IPA would be a terrible thing?? I never got that bs. Is it not up to us to stay hydrated and keep an eye on our own alcohol level and health, regardless of the weather outside no matter what? Frankly, I always take my annual beer break during the summer because of the lack of robust beers.

If you got offended by that reply, my condolences to you. Seriously. Stop caring what anyone else in the world drinks, or likes. Drink what you like and stop caring what other people think, do, or say about what they think or feel about other beer.

Sounds like he's tired of know-it-alls telling him what is good and what is bad. I can relate, even if I disagree with the delivery.

The only way I can possibly think that the writer has a point (the whole summer's day thing) is if they're talking about when you're thirsty, and just want to guzzle a beer (as opposed to sipping and really tasting the beer). When I'm in Puerto Rico, they have a lager called Medalla Light, which is by no means a good beer; I'd describe it as a watered-down Heineken. However, it's so damn hot there, that I'd much rather drink an ice cold medalla than one of my favorite beers, warmed to my preferred temperature. I by no means think that what I'm drinking tastes great, but as something on a hot day, it does the trick.

Also, he's right that beer snobs can be really obnoxious; any type of snob can be, and a lot of times, is. However, I also hate the concept of "quantity over quality" when it comes to beer; why would being able to drink more of something be considered such a positive? I love beer, but rarely do I sit around thinking, "man, I really wish that I had a 12 pack of Bourbon County that I could drink in one sitting."

    to each his own.

as far as right now is concerned, I have zero intentions of drinking BMC ever again.

I probably wouldn't opt for an 8% stout during a 90 degree July picnic, but, if that's what you like then go to town. and if you want to have a few bud lites during said picnic - good for you too. I'll opt for a wheat beers, pales, saison, sours, gees anything thats low abv.

Since you purposefully didn't provide us with the context, I have no way of knowing who/what the person was responding to, and I'm not able to make a judgment about whether beer geeks were or were not getting offended by the article.

So based solely on that comment you mentioned in your post, I'd say they are entitled to their opinion, and yeah - judgmental beer geeks can be annoying at times.

Am I the only beer nerd that believes every beer has it's place? I know some responses will include "yeah the sink drain". Which I can dig. The only thing that gets on my nerves are these overly hyped beers that taste sub par to regulars in my fridge. Then some may say, "your tastes are sub-par." How the fuck do you know? Because you have a limited beer that has an overly hyped score on this site? Back to basics, drink what you like. Not what others say you must like.

I agree with his statement about craft beer during the summer, but the delivery is terrible. Coors Light sucks, sure, but there is a time and place for it IMHO. I'm not that big of an elitist.

Both sides of this argument come up quite often and it's always the same old thing -- people getting their panties in a bunch over the other side's opinion. I'm going to take path less traveled: Middle of the damn road. I cannot for the life of me figure out why people can't see both sides of this coin. Sometimes you want a sipping beer with a truckload of flavor. Sometimes you want to drink a 6-pack of a lower ABV beer at a BBQ with food...

Considering the majority of your top-rated beers are extremely high in alcohol, it would seem you like the concept of "quantity over quality" just fine when it comes to ABV. Or do you understand that there are equally good low ABV/subtle beers as there are high ABV/flavor bombs? (If you do, then it shouldn't be too great of a leap to understand why some people like to hang out with friends drinking such beers over the course of an extended period of time, right? Indeed many such beers are brewed in a way such that they improve/take on ever greater degrees of nuance and flavor the more you drink of them.)

I agree 100% with the comments you quoted. Not only do "we" shoot [OP's term] those who don't quaff the same malt beverages we prefer, but we even paint them with a brush so broad it forms a mega acronym called "B.M.C". Beer geek, snob, or nerd, I see more than I care to of craft beer enthusiasts on this site getting "worked into a frenzy" all the time about breweries that are too big, distribute too far, sell outs, make crafty products, protect their trademarks, and other nonsense like that. I think the guy you quoted nailed it. Way more of "us" are quick to criticize what's in his glass and not the other way around.

If I'm thirsty on a hot summer day, I drink water, lemonade, sweet tea, etc.

I don't need somewhat-beer-flavored water in a can. There are better options than macro AALs. That is the point. I would rather get a berliner weisse, lighter pale ale, or well-made lager 100% of the time. I find no reason to support big beer by consuming the swill they put out.

The quoted article is the equivalent of saying, "I love authentic Mexican food, but when I want diarrhea on the cheap, I go to Taco Bell." While the reasoning is valid, it is juvenile.

All the above is my simple opinion. It is not better than yours, but I adhere to it.

A friend of mine texted me the other night and told me "this stuff is great, you'll really like it" Shocktop Honey Bourbon. I just wrote back and said sounds tasty. I have no intention of trying it and I hope he doesn't offer me one the next time I go to his house. He drinks Bud Light daily and yes I do drink it if he offers me one. My momma always told me to be polite if you'e a guest in someones home. I have not paid for a BMC in over 25 years and that's not about to change anytime soon.

Lucky you, I've got a sixer of Budweiser! It is a perfectly made beer that is the BJCP definition of its style. Oh, you brought a twee 5oz bottle of barrel aged IPA with coffee dingle-berries to the ballpark today? No, I'd rather not drink that style, even if your beer is literally the definition of the characteristics.
