Who is Dr. Bill Sysak?

he is the "Beverage Supervisor" for Stone. What this means is he orchestrates the festivals, tastings, pairing and other events at Stone Brewery and Bistro. He is also a Certified Cicerone (Master level I believe), meaning he knows a great deal about tasting and evaluating beer, along with paring it. Plus I am sure he does a lot more.

Lastly and just as important, he is a very nice guy. At the Stone events he heads up a large bottle share that is very inclusive. He is great to talk with and very generous. When i was first getting into the beer community and went to a Stone event, he was one of the first people I met. His (along with others) passion for beer AND community made me feel welcome and excited to not just be into craft beer for the beer but also for the relationships through tastings, forums, and events.

second, giant collector who is also a pairing master and now works for stone. he has a gajillion beers (see first again) and can pair anything with a beer masterfully

 

However, he is not a real doctor.

That is corect I was a medic in the military (where I got my nickname) and then worked for 20+ years in the medical field. I wasn't a nurse either as many people assume. I wore many hats in the medical field: a medic, an ER technician, OR tech, Surgical assistant for an Orthopod, Cast Technician, Scribe, Encoder, trauma tech etc., I am also not a Master Cicerone, yet. I am a Cicerone and have had talks with Nicole and Ray (Cicerone.org) about bringing the Master test to the west coast at which time I will take it and hopefully pass. Cheers

I can personally confirm him as a legendary collector, extremely knowledgable about beer, spirits, cigars, and food pairings, and very connected in the industry. The reason you should care is that he expresses this in a way that evangelizes beer advocacy without pretension or intimidation. He is continually willing to help people find their own way to a greater appreciation of beer as one of the finer things in life. People like him are part of why it's so rewarding to be part of the craft beer community.

When I got the untappd friend request from Dr. Bill, I thought, wow I've really made it in the beer world. Then I saw how many friends he had and that he sent my sister a request as well. I do enjoy seeing some of the crazy check ins he has.

Seriously, how do you mock someone's nickname who served their country and continues to serve the beer community? I doubt there is anyone on this website that has a CV that serves this demographic any better.

 

he's not a doctor. pointing out that he takes a title that requires legitimate training and years of work to earn is not denigrating his actual accomplishments. if he were " medic " bill or " pourmaster " bill, i'd keep quiet.
