I need an ethical ruling from the team. My local grocery store has a decent selection of craft beers. They sell one of my favorites, Samuel Smith's Chocolate Stout. It is about $12 a 4 pack. However, right down the aisle they have the make your own Craft Pack for $10 for a 6 pack. You see where this is headed. Sam Smith's Chocolate stout is one of the options. So I can make a 6er of Sam Smith's for less than a 4 pack.

Ethical dilemma - or delicious pricing loop hole?

Does your grocery store have a two bottle limit per six pack? That's usually how they deal with things like that.

If not, then there's no dilemma, methinks.

Good point. I will have to check into that. I don't recall seeing anything like that posted.

Loop hole, for sure. Don't lose any more sleep over it. I regularly check the "create your own" sections of stores for steals like you mentioned. My buddy made out with 6 Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Downs for $3 under retail price last night. Constant vigilence pays off!

If you're going to ignore the rules, it's even cheaper to just put them in your pocket and walk out the door.

Put 6 bottles of Samuel Smith's Chocolate Stout in the 6-pack holder and take it to the register. If there is a problem with that selection, the person taking your money will let you know.

    Cheers!

If it's part of the mix your own six pack, nothing is stopping you from getting it, completely within the store's policies. However, if it wasn't part of the mix your own six pack, and you took bottles out of pre-existing packs and passed them as mix-six beers, that's a douche move.

Usually the beers in the mix a 6 pack area (at least in my area) are on the edge of their freshness dates. So that may be the case here, the bottles may be old and the store wants to move them quicker so if I were you I would check the date to ensure freshness and then buy.

They probably don't actually allow it, but if they do, I wouldn't do it, as I know it's stealing. That said, if you saw the loopholes corporate business exploited to make a buck you'd probably think this issue with the Sammy Smith's as tremendously small potatoes.

    Yep - Wegmans.
Also - I agree pulling singles out and moving to a Craft Pack is a major douche move. I see 4's and 6ers that are missing a sibling and it really ticks me off.

Reminds me of a thread on here not too long ago where the OP wondered if it was acceptable to break apart mixed 12 packs to make a pack he liked because he didn't like one of the beers included in the pack. Needless to say, he got reamed

Tell me about it. The mix six has not been a good value in the grocery store since I can't remember when. In the bottle shop it can be very pricey to mix six because the ones I want are $4 and up. I used to do it and now I just buy six packs and four packs.

I remember that one, people were not kind to him, with good reason.

If there is no 2 bottle limit, part of me says they are fools for not knowing their product and failing to do their job and deserve the consequences. The other part of me has a hard time taking advantage of that.

Yeah, the Wegmans near me almost always has Bigfoot in the create-your-own six pack. $10 for six Bigfoots. I don't feel guilty. There's also another store that has Rabid Duck mislabeled as Duck-Rabbit Marzen, and they're selling it for $1 a bottle. Don't feel guilty there either.

The Wegmans in Geneseo once had a cache of 4 Founders Breakfast Stouts- so I essentially got 4 FBS and two additional beers for under the price of a 4pk of FBS. Was really nice.

Was at World Market and in their mix a six pack section they had an Old Rasputin that was marked at $1.99/btl when their 4 packs sell for $10.99. I purchased just the one bottle and have no regrets. It must have been in the mix a six section for a reason.

This is normal at Wegmans. I see this at mine with Burton Baton, Sculpin, Dirtwolf, FBS and when in season, they have had Hopslam in there as well. Might as well save a bit of money and do the create a pack if the opportunity is there.

You now have a sense of how it feels to be a 'beer guy' at retail. That's always a pain in the tuckus. :sunglasses:
