Hey, everyone. Since the last Cellar Photos thread was locked and we've been given permission to start it up again, let's revive this one. I know it was a favorite amongst the forums. Can't wait to check out your photos.

I live in New Orleans, so a basement cellar is not a feasible thing here. My roommate and I had been using 2 mini fridges with temperature controllers for quite some time, but I still had bottles all over my room/closet/etc. I found a pretty large fridge for $50 on Craigslist Monday. It took a little bit of elbow grease to get it looking nice, but I can fit the majority of my bottles and my roommate's in this thing. Loose order: bottom shelf 12 ounce bottles sours>old ales/barleywines>stouts, lower middle is all corked bottles and mostly sours, upper middle is filled with assorted 750s sours>saisons>stouts, upper shelf is mostly BA 22 ounce bombers, and the doors are filled with lots of BCBS and some randoms.

Built racks from scrap lumber a little bit ago now. Still have plans to build more for the 22s.

I need to get organized in my cellar. I got beer (and bourbon) laying all over the place down there and my wife has been making comments. I will be checking in for ideas and inspiration.

Thanks. It's made from dock sections and the spindles from the old deck that came with the house!

I've read, most beer is best stored upright to minimize the surface area exposed to air. Who knows if it's true though.. I suppose it may be more of a matter of which method works best for the space one has.

    Cheers!

After about three years I've pretty much hit my peak quantity, and now plan to do some quantity reduction and focus on quality beers I've had good luck with. And no, I didn't get a full case of BCBCS, just happened to snag the box.

Theres a few things to consider. If the bottle is on its side, yes more surface area, but it also helps form a seal preventing more air in, so you can exhaust the remaining oxygen in the bottle. Corked and caged beers do want a little air in to help with the conditioning, so really you just want to prevent dry-out and on its side is fine. However, while bottle caps are lined with an inert plastic, constant contact with a highly alcoholic beer may cause a breakdown and may get down to the raw steel in the bottle cap. That would make for a terrible tasting brew.
