"Three times a week? What are you, some kind of slacker?" - everyone in Franconia

Inside the Spezial Keller they have branded beer glasses from the past up on their wall. One of them was this style, with the Spezial Keller logo on it. I took a shot in the dark and asked a passing Kellnerin if I could by some of those. She said no, not anymore, they only had the Steinkrugs. I mentioned that I really liked that specific style of glass, though. No luck, but at least she had a good humor about it.

MJT, Schlenkerla Fastenbier was served at the Yards Smoked beer event (September 2013). That beer was awesome! I went back for many refills of that beer. I gave it a 4.5/5 but I can certainly see why you gave it 5/5.

I started a thread in the Mid-Atlantic forum about the Yards Real Ale Invitation beer event (which was yesterday). You might enjoy reading it:http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/yards-7th-annual-real-ale-festival.167515/

    Cheers!

Ah.. I am far better at drinking and photoing beer than describing it in writing. I guess I can say, it's growing on me - it's not my favorite style but, I am appreciating it more and more.

I am a huge fan of Islay scotch with its big smokey peat flavor and this Schlenkerla offering gives me a similar taste in beer form.

My wife on the other hand, hates it. More for me. :grinning:

I do admit however, I found this offering much better and will seek it out:

Keep drinking. You need to get past #3 in a single sitting to truly appreciate it.

p.s. My wife (and her whole family) hates it, too.

It's surprisingly smooth and easy to drink. I suspect 3 wouldn't be a problem.

For me their is a huge difference between beautiful, medicinally peat, and bacon flavor in a beer; the former I love, whilst the latter, possibly due to being a vegetarian, I downright loathe.

Damn, you should sell those pictures to the breweries! They're much better than the usual product pictures with nothing going on in front of a white background.

Not only not a problem, it may be a true revelation. once the smoke begins to takea back seat, the subtleties of the underlying Maerzen emerge. And that base beer by itself would be an absolute world-class example/exemplar of the style. Seriously, give it a try at the very latest when you make it to the Schlenkerla tavern in Bamberg. The fourth Schlenkerla Maerzen in a sitting is the best beer in the universe (and I hate viewing beer as a competition, but I make an exception for this.

thx, but I have only had a my good Nikon camera for a couple months. Before that, I used my iPhone camera - I still do occasionally. But I need more practice - and more beer!

Wheat beer glass is not #properglassware for this beer!

You can order these from Schlenkerla's website (delivered directly to your door) but only during Advent. Likewise with their Ur-bock, but only after the Bamberg Bockbier tapping in October.

I am not a fan of beers that heavily taste of smoked meat either. I have no excuse for that. I am an avid meat eater and I love smoked meat (I had kielbasa for dinner last night!) but a beer that tastes of smoked meat is not appealing to me.

I do enjoy other 'forms' of smoke though.

    Cheers!

Different strokes indeed. I can't stand that phenolic, medicinal twinge that peat smoked malt produces.

Brought my best friend to the Schlenkerla pub in Bamberg in '99 on his first trip to Germany.... Warned him about this bier.... love it or hate it... So, we sat in the Schwemme and had four 0.5l glasses each, and only left because we had a train to catch.... Mmmmmmm!

    Prosit!!
