Last night I opened yet another 750ml from Unibroue where the bottle fermentation obviously failed, flat and cloying sweet. This time it was a Maudite. Last time it was a Fin du Monde. This is the third or fourth Unibroue I've had to pour out in the past few months, and it breaks my heart to think that I'm done with this brewery.

That's really unsettling to hear. How old was the bottle? I have a 750 of Trois Pistoles from about six months ago that I've been waiting to crack open, but I kind of wanted to try it alongside a fresh bottle. Have you had this issue with TP before?

I opened a Fin du Monde last night, and it was amazing. Is your beer store selling fresh and rotating? Or could it be possibly storage of the bottles?

I wonder what the brewery would comment about this, if they say anything at all. There take would be interesting......

Hope the next one nails it for you. Best of luck.

    Cheers!

Interesting. Lately I've been drinking more Unibroue. Love their stuff. Sucks about your bottle though.

Were the corks cracked? If the bottles were old it's possible that the corks dried out and air got inside somehow. This could be especially true if you got all your bottles at the same bottleshop and didn't notice any stock rotation.

I have had the same experience as the OP a couple of times...but it was a case of old stock each time. That was entirely my fault as I bought them with a bit of dust on them.

That being said, I think Unibroue is still pretty good. My last 4 bottles have been spot on, and I had them for quite a while before opening.

Unibroue is solid and very reasonably priced. I'd like to see them come out with a saison that was readily available stateside

It does sound like a stock rotation issue. I hesitate to blame the store, but it doesn't make sense that one person's anecdotal issues are indicative of the health of the brewery's products or business model.

Have you reported the problem to the Brewery? That can sometimes produce results that surprise.

Nah it's better to just give up entirely and be "done" with a solid brewery

One bad beer doesn't imply that the brewery is "done".

From Quebec to La., that a good distance. Probably not a lot of Unibroue sold in La. = old stock.

Unibroue has been producing excellent beers for almost 25 years. I doubt they're having a brain fart.

I would say that a 20 year old brewery is not going to be undone by a couple of bad bottles on your part.

The title of this thread made me think the brewery had declared bankruptcy or burned down or something.

    Nah, they aren't done.

But I did hear that they are releasing a new beer next month called La Fin du Unibroue. It's part of a new series. The next beer after that will be called Trois Mauvaises Bouteilles.

    Strange, huh?
