So Black Note Stout hit Northern Virginia today. In 99% of the places, it sold out in minutes. I got off of work a little early today, assuming that it just wasn't my year. With zero expectations, I called a store I knew had gotten it. Shockingly, one bottle left. With 20 minutes between me and the store, I asked if I could purchase it with a card and pick it up, expecting to be turned down. Instead, the guy said not to worry about it, that he'd hold a bottle for me. Now, this is a store I stop by about once a week, but rarely buy (who isn't on a budget these days). I'll occasionally strike up a brief conversation, but I'm by no means a "regular." On top of that, the guy who held it for me was not the shop's "beer guy," lower down on the totem pole, but who knew how highly demanded this beer is. The guy made my day, but I feel a little bad. It was the last bottle; did someone get to the store before me, only to be told it was unavailable? I'm fairly sure noplace else would do this (publicly, anyways). So, I guess my question is, should I feel bad? Will beer karma come back to get me?

Why would you feel bad for developing a relationship with someone or a store, and they end up helping you out in the end?

If you feel that bad, I'd bring it back. Or, you can just send it to me. This has clearly caused you more anguish than you'd bargained for...I can help you stop the pain.

I work at a liquor store myself and this is a very common thing. Look at it this way, the person who didn't get it will just think someone bought the last one already. Besides by calling in you showed you care more about getting the beer and you played it smarter than the person who lost out.

Your beer karma will come back to get you if you don't pay it forward. Or at least, I hope it does! To me that means no hoarding and no general douchery. Enjoy being on the receiving end and hit somebody back with the same love! That's my vote.

You're over thinking it. Stores around here hold beers all the time so you may have killed someone else's chance of getting it but you've had the same happen to you even if you didn't know it. Buying all three cases a store has, now that's bad beer karma! Enjoy your beer and take comfort in knowing that you're better than most for actually caring

    • Hate to say it, but the only way I would ever get Dirt wolf, Enjoy By, or Bourbon County etc. is by having my regular guy hold a bottle for me. I guess that's bad? He actually calls me when something good comes in and asks if I would like him to hold one. Of course I only get that courtesy because I have been a regular customer for many years. So I guess it pays to be loyal.. don't lose sleep over it.

The thing is that I've never talked to this guy in my life. He just did a solid for a stranger on the phone.

Clearly you strong armed him. Now he's going to be out of a job and will probably lose his house. Hope your damn beer was worth it OP.

The consensus so far would seem to be that there's no reason to feel conflicted. However, I'll note that no one from Northern Virginia has weighed in yet.

I went to my local store that had just gotten their shipment in and noticed a Bells case with a blueish bottle inside. I took said case to the register and was almost able to purchase the whole thing until the cashier asked her partner if "this was that beer they're all supposed to hold back". Still left with a four pack though. Can't complain!!

I got a bottle from one of the TW's in NoVA yesterday. I saw that someone posted they had a few bottles left and when I got home I called and they said they had a couple bottles, I basically asked "I'm sure you can't hold it for me" but the lady asked how long till I could get there and they had it behind the counter for me when I walked in. I was surprised but very happy to actually get a bottle, didn't think I stood a chance since I can't leave work in the middle of the day to track this stuff down.

Absolutely do not feel bad. I am a beverage manager with a extensive, hand selected craft beer department. Every single limited release that I get I always will set aside a portion of them in my back room specifically for your situation. Regular customers always get treated a bit differently because of the relationship that has been built. But also if your a genuinely nice person who askes you will be treated with that same respect. Understand that as a customer asking goes a long way. If your a dick you will get no respect and shitty beer.

Don't feel bad. If somebody walked into the store 5 minutes after you called looking for that last bottle of Black Note, maybe they should have made that phone call before you did instead. If I've learned anything in the whole rare beer world, it's that the acquisition of certain high-demand beers can be pretty random, a crazy and unpredictable mix of pure serendipity and bad luck, with a little karma mixed in. And you can bet that someday you won't get that last bottle of some other beer you really want, and some other person will.

At the end of the day, it's just beer. Now go enjoy that Black Note!
