Fascinating. Could Plead the 5th become the midwest version of the Eclipse series? It's one hell of a base stout to put in all these different barrels.

They only had 18 bases to sell. Much less than what oppermans had.

Rumor is the labels on the Tippin's bottles are regular Pt5 labels....not even BBPt5. From a reliable source (he can take credit if he wants to), I heard Oppermans put their own lables on their bottles.

Can already see it in the reviews: "Wasn't much barrel presence detectable at all", or "Really had to search for any vanilla or oak flavors". (As they set down their glass of regular Pt5 someone traded them saying it was a Tippin's Pt5)

I drank one last night for this exact reason. They do have the regular label, but they definitely have been aged in bourbon barrels. Once I get the Opperman's I will do a side by side by side.

Edit: I bet they will still sell you 2 bottles if you go there right now.

Yes, the regular Pt5 labels have a large blank space over which Opperman's pasted an additional label (something like "aged in Opperman's Bourbon Barrels"). But it was pretty sweet regardless.

Eclipse is all sold through 50/50, correct?

Can someone explain to me (from the west side) how this works? Opperman's and Tippin's buy the barrels and the send them to DH and essentially "design" the PT5? Or does Opperman's and Tippin's do something to the barrel in between?

In the case of Opperman(from what I understand)... He chose and purchased the barrels by hand. Then worked out a deal with Dark Horse for them to use the barrels to age the Plead The 5th batch. The end result is a barrel aged PT5th that is exclusively offered at Opperman's Cork n Ale in Saginaw. 55 cases total were offered to the public. Not sold in any other store other than Jeff Opperman's shop.

Jeff does his own thing with whiskeys, etc. However, I don't believe he did anything in particular to these barrels. They were fairly high end bourbon brands though. E. Craig was one I think. Maybe 12 year? Cant remember the other.

Dom at Tippin's told me that they had bought a barrel and a Dark Horse rep asked them if they wanted to participate (in the same fashion as Opperman's) and they agreed. However, they had no clue when or even if they would get their barrel back. DH called them this week to tell them they had bottled it.
