Does anyone else have a problem with the multitude of beer abbreviations and acronyms? Please excuse me while I rant, but this has been on my mind for some time. And my apologies if this topic has already been covered in a forum - if it has, it needs to be covered again. While I completely understand the efficacy of using abbreviations and acronyms for just about everything in today's society - excessive abbreviations in the beer world are frustrating to me. Not only does it enhance the elitist craft beer tendencies that many complain about on Beer Advocate, but it also confuses even die hard fans of craft beer and Budweiser alike. For example - shouldn't everyone know what BCBS stands for? Well, BCBS and KBS are so popular, shouldn't they? If that's the case, what about Backyard Rye Bourbon County Brand Stout? Or simply BRBCBS?? Maybe I'm off, but this is an example where it's more difficult to translate the acronym. Don't even get me going about the use of acronyms in the trading forums - regrettably, I am moderately guilty of that myself! And what about the forum I just read about the prices of Brooklyn BCS? With no disrespect to the poster, how is someone from outside of Brooklyn Brewery's distribution footprint to easily decipher this code, especially when a couple of easy searches can't answer the question? Spelling it out might also help raise awareness of the brewery in places like Sonoma County and the Russian River Valley in California, homes of a few beers that often go by abbreviations to those "in the know."

The point of language is to communicate - the excessive use of acronyms in talking about beer is contrary to the point, it enforces beer elitism, and it creates more of a closed beer community than what it should be - open and available to all who want to discover it. So please, if I may, please use discretion when using acronyms. Thank you!

I think I learned all of the acronyms that I needed to know within a couple weeks, although I did stumble a couple times with differentiating between Beer Advocate and Barrel Aged. I was curious about many acronyms, and eventually I figured them out. I actually felt a bit of accomplishment when I learned what people were talking about. I certainly wouldn't expect people to spell out Black Chocolate Stout every time when a simple BCS will suffice for most forum-goers.

I can see using acronyms of the most popular beers like KBS, BCBS, etc. But the most should be spelled out.

I agree that 2-3 popular ones can be used (KBS is actually named KBS nowadays, so that one is okay regardless of complaints), but others need to be spelled out the first time they are used in a post. If that term is used again in the same post then it's okay to use the abbreviation.

Seriously I'm with you. I think I have most of them down, but I still see the odd one that confuses the s**t out of me. Like ADwtD took me a while to figure out.

I think the assumption behind the innundation of acronyms is that people who sign up on the BA forums as opposed to lurking are either knowledgeable/resourceful enough or are at least studious/diligent enough to look up beers in the humongous database that we've come to know as BeerAdvocate.

    If all else fails, Google.

You learned all the acronyms but BCS stands for Black Chocolate Stout?! Pretty sure you just proved the OP's point - which I'm in agreement with.

I can figure most out too...but the whole point is that we shouldn't have to decipher code when talking about beer.

The biggest and brands and names are more than fine. As a noob it didn't take long at all, but I'd say around 50% of abbreviations used really shouldn't be used in a national/worldwide forum.

You missed BS which is an acronym widely used as a shorthand for twaddle.

I wasn't being snarky...only that I've seen it used for Bourbon County Stout quite a bit too.

Then you have seen it used incorrectly, because BCBS is the acronym for Bourbon County Brand Stout. Regardless, there are typically context clues within posts that help people differentiate.

    My understanding:

BCS - Black Chocolate Stout (Brooklyn)
BCBS - Bourbon County Brand Stout (GI)

    Easily confused though.

Side note - I'm always so tempted to accept people's ISO: V12 in the trading forums, and send them a Victory V12

Exactly. Wasn't saying it was BCBS, just that I've seen it confused and even the google search post above reflects that.

Reading the trading forums is a headache...good thing I don't have any whalez to shop!

Nope. I rarely use abbreviations or acronyms. Sometimes I have no idea what they mean when someone else uses them. But amazingly enough it has never once bothered me in the least.

To be honest, I was a bit taken aback by your response to what I considered a fairly routine acronym, but I think I understand where you're coming from now. I haven't ventured into the trading forums because that's just not my thing, but I'm sure that the acronym use there is a step up from what I've become accustomed to.

It took me the longest time to figure out what BCBS meant. As someone who handles benefits here at work, BCBS to me = Blue Cross Blue Shield.

All kidding aside, I'm OK with this one and a couple others (KBS) but otherwise I agree with the OP.
