I have not had beer in over a year. I had surgery and have been on meds which do not mix with alcohol. I cannot wait to drink beer again. Can anyone tell me what they would drink after a year with no beer? Should I start with a Pilsner or IPA and work up or should I just jump in and go for the strong stuff?

I would choose something you know you love.

That's a really tough one, I would say you should probably shy away from the high abv stuff just to ease back into it from that perspective... other than that really whatever you've been craving for the last year

I would find a DD and have him/her take me to my favorite brewery. Belly up!

ha, I speak from experience! I just had a baby...
I know you must have had passing cravings for a certain beer. THAT'S the one

For me, I craved IPAs/DIPAs... specifically sucks. So that was my first. Followed by ten fidy (fine, not an IPA), resin, and a few other hoppy things.
Avoid really high ABV's... because tolerance will likely be low and it will hit you like a ton of bricks!
I'm sticking to below 12% for the first month, and one brew a day or less....

Since it's been a year, If you wanna get lit real quick go with something strong. If you wanna enjoy your first beers in over a year, get something you like but not too high in ABV. Either way eat a good meal. Thats what i would do if for some reason i did not have a brew in that long. Judging by your reviews I would go with pilsner Urquell. It's your highest rated, lowest ABV brew.
After all do you want to get blitzed, or enjoy some beer for the first time in a year.

Start with non alcoholic beer for 3-5 months. Then move to Miller 64 for another 3-5 months. Bud light should be good for a month or two after that. Then finally work your way up to a nice session beer for 3 months. After that, post back here and ask us what you should drink after that and we will give our opinions.

You should do what other people tell you.

On a less sarcastic note, welcome back to beer.

Not to minimize your health, but I have been on a MUCH shorter "beer-cation". Since I observe the laws of Passover, we are not allowed to consume anything for 8 days of the holiday that contains any levening agents (i.e.-yeast, etc.) so beer is out. Since I recently have become a huge craft beer fan, this is the first year I've encountered this "problem". In past years I've always missed things like pizza. But this year I will celebrate the end of the holiday (Tuesday night), not with a pizza. But with a BCBS!:grinning:

I agree with the recommendations of Surly and you live in the land of plenty! I would say Abrasive is still available, if not Furious. If it happened to me I would miss the citrus forward IPA/DIPAs. They're my faves.
Hope you enjoy getting back into it. Would be kinda fun doing it all over again.
    Cheers!

OK, I will add the disclaimer that I love stouts... so below 12% is low abv for me
My first week was in the 8-10% range (DIPAs and IPAs...)

the 12% limit means I can't go near most of the top shelf (stout shelf) of my beer fridge! Although today's easter selection (biscotti break w/ a cherry on top) scrapes that limit at a little over 11%
