First of all, many thanks again to @MattRiggs for arranging all of this and being so generous not just with his time but more importantly with his beer as well. We sampled many beers, talked about all kinds of things under the German beer sun, and in general just had a good time. I hope you will all post your own reports and/or pictures here. For my own two cents, I'd like to say Matt's small batch Imperial Stout was really delicious, hopefully Faust will find a way to make (and sell) more of that beer so people get a chance to see how good it is.

My pics didn't turn out so great, but here in no particular order are:

...an ominous Faust logo from their keller,

    ...some actively fermenting lager beer,

...Matt siphoning us all some pre-filtration Pils to sample, and finally

...a shot of lovely Miltenberg from the heights of the brewery.

I didn't take a "haul" picture, but I managed to bring back a Faust Pils, a Hefeweizen Hell (Matt said it was his personal favorite), a Dopplebock, a Riesen Spezial beer (aka their Festbier), and finally one bottle of the Faust Eisbock, which we all sampled in an awesomely dingy beer cellar and agreed was delicious.

After Faust we all headed over to Zum Riesen for some grub and more cavorting.

    It was a great time.

Thanks again to Matt for arranging it all and being so generous with his time!

    Prost!

Dang, that looks awesome. Love the open fermentor and the pils straight from the tank. Sorry I had to miss it. Prost!

Open fermentation for a lager? I've only heard of this process for hefeweizen. Or do they open ferment everything?

fairly certain Augustiner still use open fermentation for its lagers.

I'm not sure, but here is their hefe-weizen, if I remember correctly.

I'll do mine tomorrow, probably. First, today we must entertain the future, possible, almost probably mother-in-law today, hell it's Easter here and who knew it's such a family oriented holiday. I ain't posting pics of THAT meeting, though.

Every brewery I've been to in Franconia had open fermenters.

Yes, with the exception of a few special releases (Auswanderer for example), we open ferment everything in primary fermentation. Although there are some other breweries that continue to open ferment their lagers, it is very much the exception rather than the rule. Open fermenting for hefe's is much more common.

I had a great time with everyone yesterday. I hope we can do this again sometime. If anyone has any ideas about where the next "BA Germany Meetup" should be, I'd love to hear them.

First, thank you SO MUCH, Matt! You are The Man! We had a super great time both during the brewery tour and afterwards. We will be back soon, especially of you keep any of the Imperial Stout around for long (you should cellar some in - bourbon barrels maybe?). Faust Brewery was a wonderful place to visit, but the whole village of Miltenberg is not to be missed.

..and now to the photo dump!

    Faust's Imperial Stout - DELICIOUS!

This fresh unfiltered pils was one of the most tasty beers, ever. My wife agreed and pils is one of her least fav styles.

The party moved from the brewery to this restaurant for dinner where more beer was consumed (including 4 cans of La Cumbre Elevated IPA)..

Then we moved the party to a biergarten on the Main

The next morning we explored Miltenberg... wow.. this place is great! Much, much, MUCH better (in my opinion) than Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

-N8, first of all nice meeting you, your wife, and your friend, and thank you for bringing the IPA! I enjoyed my sample.

Awesome photos as always. I'm glad your Keller pics turned out well because mine were complete crap. And I'm glad to hear the party kept a' rollin' after I bailed on you all early to catch my train.

I brought the (Back-to-back WBC Gold Medal award winning) Faust Eisbock with me to an Easter party and it was a big hit!

    -Cheers!

Well, I shouldn't get a vote as I will not be able to attend any more Meet-Ups, BUT...

    (in no particular order)
Zum Uerige is a great place in a great town (Düsseldorf).
Anywhere in Bamberg would be fun.
Anywhere in Regensburg so long as @Stahlsturm would be happy showing people around.
Berlin because any excuse to go to Berlin is a good one.
    Köln.
    Munich.

Wow, nice! Thanks for sharing. I'm still sad I couldn't go...

The fermenting beer in those open rectangular tanks looks like a gigantic Tiramisu!

I've been to many breweries in my life, but the pics of open fermentation always hearken thoughts of hot tubs or swimming pools filled with beer - wunderbar!

Knowing full well that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, you guys definitely had the greenest grass this weekend, as I am sure many here stateside (or elsewhere) would have loved to be a part of this. Prost ihr Säcke!

Speaking of open fermentation...I've been to Gambrinus brewery in Prague twice, in 2000 and 2001. The first time, the open tanks were open to visiting groups, so that every one could pass them and stand right next to them. One year on and one could only see them behind a glass panel.
I can only guess that too many groups of adolescents visiting Prague (just like we were back then) did nothing good to the open fermenting beer.
