    FLOYD D'RUE

Floyd D’Rue is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and Three Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.7% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in rum barrels for one year. Going with a spiced rum theme, additions of vanilla bean, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, star anise, nutmeg and fresh ginger were added just prior to bottling. The result is a fantastically robust ale with hints of citrus, rum, chocolate, molasses, exotic spices and toasty oak.

Please consume by 6/30. This beer may contain Lactobacillus. Please keep refrigerated.

    RUE D'FLOYD

Rue D’Floyd is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and Three Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.4% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in bourbon barrels for one year. Rue D’ Floyd developed notes of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee from barrel aging, which was supplemented with vanilla beans, Portola coffee, TCHO cacao nibs and cherries prior to bottling. The result is a wonderfully balanced yet flavorful ale exploding with coffee, dark chocolate, caramel and dark fruit.

Please consume by 6/30. This beer may contain Lactobacillus. Please keep refrigerated.

Well those just tick all the right boxes for me, especially spiced rum barrel aged... Where do I get some?!

My only concern is that 'consume by' date. Is this a way of saying, "it could be awful soon and we're not doing anymore refunds" ?

So sad that it is infected.

These sound good, I'm not sure how I feel about them possibly containing Lactobacillus, though. Seems sketchy to release beers that might be infected.

Of course I'll be ISO, but they will probably elude me. Both sound interesting although I wish they would have left lacto out of it.

why would they knowingly release an infected beer?

    This sounds amazing!
The fact that it may contain lacto is even better! This is a perfect case of "buy at least 2 of these".
Have one now and hide one away for a year or 5...maybe a sour punch like tart of darkness!
    ISO!

FLOYD D'RUE and RUE D'FLOYD aka Consume by 6/30 - Could this be a marketing ploy? If so, sign me up!

Honest question: How unusual is it for a brewery of this size (or bigger) to have infections like these?

Either beer could turn out just fine, wondrous after some souring, or completely undrinkable. I dunno, I'm not willing to cough up $17 for a bottle of unknown, especially after I dropped a huge amount of cash on beer in Oregon last week and I'm going out to California in a few weeks. I bet I can catch these beers on tap on site so I'd rather have my fill in the taproom than roll the dice on bottles.

What other beers were infected this year if I may ask?

What kind of crazy lacto strains do they have around there that could do anything inside of a nearly 15% abv beer?

I'm all for some good ol' souring bacteria, but even when it doesn't ruin a beer, it can temper the enjoyment of it. Especially a big, over-the-top beer with seeming tendencies towards sweetness, like this one.

I had one of the 2013 White Chocolates, and it was clear that there was lacto in the bottle. It didn't ruin the beer by any means--I drank the whole bottle myself--but it did tarnish a bit of the shine on what I imagine would have been an otherwise outstanding beer. It was decent with the bit of tartness that was present, but with the other awesome flavors of coconut, caramel, molasses, etc., it just seemed to take away from those rich, sweet flavors a bit.

    EDIT:
White Chocolate was a 15% beer and the ABV definitely prevented the lacto from completely taking over. That said, it was definitely detectible.
