We are looking to visit the castle ruins (Altes Schloss) and hang out for a while on Saturday and were wondering of there was any must taste local beers we should check out. Advice appreciated. -N8
The Vogelbräu brewpub, which brews one of Germany's hoppiest Pilsners, is in nearby Karlsruhe. Maybe bottles would be available somewhere closer to BB (assuming they even bottle, which I am not at all sure they do)?
As far as I know, Vogelbräu doesn't bottle and distribute. They do, however, sell growlers on the premises that you can then take with you. Well worth a visit if you are passing through Karlsruhe. I've had their beers at local beer festivals on a number of occasions, and they never fail to impress. The Weizen-Doppelbock especially (sadly, it's only available in August) is incredible.
To be honest, Karlsrhue isn't high on our list of places to visit. We stopped there a couple times last year to see the Schloss downtown etc. We found the city rather industrialish & utilitarian - the ongoing rail construction probably didn't help either. Perhaps this brewery will give us a reason to revisit. Thx.
Having lived in Germany for going on 13 years I have learned one "rule of thumb" that I go by. Order the local bier, as she hands it to you, take a sip, close your eyes, sigh, and say, "Ich denke, das ist das beste Bier, das ich trank, seit ich hier bin". Maybe it will not be the best bier you have drank but it will gain their respect. I have read posts for these "so called" bier aficionado's which apparently only have this to hold on to so they feel important. As for the biers in Germany, I love them all, ok maybe I love some more that others, but we won't talk about that!!
