Ah, if only FW were bottling the Merkin (bourbon barrel-aged) - the Merlin's what you're downing by the sixer (though Merlin's undoubtedly my favorite "everyday" stout).

Agree 100%. It's one of those beers that after every sip you say to yourself, "Life is gooood."

Granted it was only one bottle, but the Double Jack I had didn't make me do cartwheels. I'll revisit it to be sure though, you never know, could have been an older bottle.

"could have been an older bottle"

Definitely give it another try and be sure to ask the store how recently they got the beer in.

When fresh, bottled DJ is just amazing. It's become my go to DIPA, as the store near me carries fresh product on a regular basis. On the other hand, I was at a large store recently that had a huge inventory several weeks back, and I picked up a bottle there, along with a few other things. The DJ display had that "picked over; I've been sitting here for while" look, which probably should have been a tip off that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Anyway, when I got it home, I ended up drain pouring the beer after a couple of sips. The beer was a sweet, hot mess, and I would have to guess it had been sitting on the shelf for at least several months. It was NOTHING like the fresh stuff I can find at my local store.

Just my two cents, but my impression is that you really need to get DJ with no more than a month of bottle age if that's at all possible. If the beer is more than 2 or 3 months old, I flat out would not buy it. Good luck.

Love most of their beers, but in all honesty I was not blown away by DBA. It was ok, but not great.

That one was of the first 6-pack purchases I ever made. Would I buy it again? Probably not, but at the time it was an excellent entry to the craft beer scene.

Yep-misread the post. I love the Merlin, and have been wanting to try the Merkin. It was on tap at a bar near me this past weekend, but alas, I was out of town. Someday...

Go to Trader Joe's, the Mission St. lineup is brewed by FW, the IPA and Pale Ale are great beers for the price.
They've come out with a Mission St. Anniversary beer the last 2 years, which has been a great buy as well.

Velvet Merlin & DBA are my favorite everyday beers, hands down. Wookey Jack was killer on tap, I need to grab some bottles ASAP. FW doesn't make a bad beer, I can't wait to visit the brewery later this year!

While on the subject of the awesomeness of FW, how does Parabola compare against Sucuba?
Sucuba made an ooey gooey mess in my clean tighty whities and it's $14.99 at the shop. Parabola is (gouged) at $29.00. I would never pay that much for a 22oz of beer, but I'm just curious if it really is THAT much better or they're just pricing because of hype.

Completely different and wouldn't compare them.

Parabola is awesome but don't pay $29, it's not that hard to come by. At $29 it's probably still cheaper to trade for even with shipping.

OP: By this time everyone who is ever on BA knows you will have Parabola soon... I think the forums will explode once you have actually had it!

Left a good job to bust out some rhyme,
let my homies know when it's beer drinkin time,
Don't waste your coin on macro swill,
Don't settle for some fizzy thrill,
if your lookin for brew that's bad to the bone,
then the name that's known is Firestone,
(Where the rubber meets the road).
