Good noon-ish, all you Cacophonous Cascade Carousers, and Symbiotic Sultans of Simcoe, cavedave here, Happy New Beer Sunday! Funny to be writing this now, here on the ridge, and not reading it written by Matt. But it was also strange when Matt began. Yet not so strange, because Matt had filled in over time for malty. He always tried to keep that NBS style, while also adding his own flair everyone enjoyed so well. I will try to do the same, even though I never filled in for Matt or malty.

Gonna break that rule a bit right here, though, this one time, to talk about this thread, 9+ years a favorite of so many BA's. Why? Because it accomplishes what we most love, better enjoyment of beer, and sharing the experience. I'm gonna go "a touch" long, also, and say a few other things too.

First, want to echo the thanks we all feel to malty and Matt for creating and shepherding this idea along, so that now we look forward to our 10th anniversary, and we're more popular than ever, as NBS should be.

utopiajane and I will be co-hosts here now.

Back in the day there weren't so many fine beers available so easily to so many of us. In the early days of NBS folks talked of beers the rest of us felt like we'd never get a chance to try. 9+ years ago many of our now-favorite breweries had not even started. I can remember reading the linked reviews with a desire that is hard to imagine today in America's golden age of fine beer.

Those who know me know I am a believer in honest reviews being added to the BA database, and, with that, what we do here on Sunday, enjoying beer together, and giving our beers a "think" at the same time, increases our abilities to enjoy all beer all the time.

You don't have to link to a review, but I am gonna note, this first and final time, that back in the day almost everybody posting in NBS linked to a review. That said, a nice description right here is certainly welcome, and wonderful, and greatly appreciated by us all.

Today is the day, and this is the place. Why not TRY a new beer today? TELL us about it. What do you see, taste, smell, and feel? Do you LOVE it? Why? What do you love about it? Not your "cup of tea "(love mixing metaphors heheh)? What didn't you care for in the beer? Your review or a description that tells a story is greatly appreciated by us all.

Don't have to be a wordsmith or a brewer, Describing and sharing NEW beers is what NBS has been about for all of it's 9+ years. Feel free to rock our clock (in Chambers Brothers fashion of course ) with linked review, pics, videos, and other world wide web wackiness to enhance our virtual tasting session.

Thanks to everyone for their participation, thus making NBS fresh, fun, and informative.

Good afternoon, Dave, and while we'll all miss Matt's intros, I'm glad that the thread is in good hands between you and Maria.

This young and beautiful day, I've got a light-ish beer from Ommegang to help power me through housework: Rare Vos.

Super-huge, long-lasting head. It took several gentle pours to fit it all into one glass.

Oh, who am I kidding? I drank the last bit straight from the bottle; I don't have the world's greatest patience.

It's a good beer. I find it a little odd that it's advertised as a Belgian cafe beer, yet clocks in at 6.5%. Granted, for someone like me - a lover of DIPAs, stouts, and Belgians - that's damn near session strength, but I would still have expected a table beer to be a little bit lower.

I also don't think the flavors are of such magnitude that it couldn't have been tuned down below 6%, maybe even down to 5%. It has a very low level of sweetness for a BPA, with a dry spiciness more often found in a Wit, and a chewy/wheaty/straw-like malt base that reminds me of a Saison (as does the aroma).

Pretty tasty, and worth checking out. Review below:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/42/593/?ba=Roguer
    3.89 / -4.2%

(-4.2% is a pretty big rDev for me, but 3.89 indicates that I think it's a damn good beer - just not amazing or truly outstanding. I wouldn't mind drinking this on any given day, especially a warm Spring or Summer day like this one.)

Just one of a few beers I have lined up today. Cheers, NBSers - now let's see what new and exciting beer is in your glass!

Big thanks to @cavedave for kicking off this new New Beer Sunday. I miss Matt already but I think that introduction says it all. I am still relatively new to BA, will have one year here in June of this year. You all have welcomed me and treated me like your little sister and i love you all for it. I have met some of you and will meet some of you and that means that being a part of this longest running thread on BA is an honor and priviledge.

So I have a little thing I wrote for Mother's Day . (from now on I will be very short winded, I promise)

Today I am drinking Ithaca beer's newest - Cayuga Cruiser.

"When the chips fall, that's where they may."

I was raised by immigrants and heard lots of very funny stuff like that. Now some things are just funny and no matter if you try, you can't really explain. Well, I'm gonna try.

A long time ago my mother took me to Atlantic City. I saw lots of people walking invisible dogs. They were holding these novelty leashes with wires in them that boast a dog that isn't really there. Later, I saw an episode of the Twilight Zone about a man and his dog. Both are dead and both approach what they think is the gate to heaven. The alleged Saint Peter says to the man "You can't bring that dog in here!" The man says things like "This dog's been my friend through thick and thin. I love this dog and he loves me. If he ain't allowed then we're just gonna haff ta move on."

Turns out it wasn't the gate to heaven after all. Smart dog.

I can still hear my imaginary friends saying so many years ago that "Every man will follow his own invisible dog into heaven." I laughed and laughed. I also learned this classic "sing-along" song written in 1925 by Harry Woods. It was on the boyscout list of approved campfire songs and I still sing it now and then.

Anyway my mother has passed on and this is her in "fiction."

    New Belgian Pale Ale Sunday

    Greetings NBSers,
And a special thanks to CaveDave for taking the wheel on this bus for this week and keeping the tradition agoing.
Cloudy and a bit drippy with hints of spring, but no actual real warmth.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you who had a mother and any one who actually is a mother on this forum.
I went with a sure thing by trying a beer from a brewery near the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    It didn't disappoint.

Now a song of hope and redemption amid loss and pain. Others have tried but the original remains the best.

    Best to all this week.

I have a great one lined up for this afternoon - my first KBS & coincidentally Untappd 500th check in - look forward to posting that after the Mother's Day brunch with the wife (note - pacific time, so it may be early evening for most of you guys)
Cheers and thank you and @utopiajane for carrying the torch!

Geez I go away one weekend and... Anyway, I am sad to see Matt go, grateful for his efforts, and relieved by his choice of successors. When I read Matt planned to step aside, Dave and Jane for the first names that came to my mind. Cheers to you two, NBS is in great hands.

I was up late last night reading bad sci-fi and having this.

Wish I had a better beer for the occasion, but this was pretty awful. Can't help myself, I'm a sucker for new to me barleywines. Cheers and happy mother's day where applicable!

Keeping the day driving on by enjoying my second new beer of this New Stout Sunday: Rough Tail Brewing's Polar Night Stout. Super aggressive, dry-hopped, and 8%.

Beautiful head; long-lasting, thick, and leaving behind tons of spiderweb lacing.

Very tasty stout. Incredibly aggressive, with tons and tons of hops. In fact, the aroma is full of dank, green hops. Thankfully, despite dry-hopping, that doesn't completely translate to the flavor, which is predominantly dark cacao. It's exceptionally bitter for the style, and a little thin, but definitely an enjoyable beer. Review below:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31393/106155/?ba=Roguer
    3.8 / -0.3%

That rDev is a little more like it. Shocking, actually, considering there aren't even 50 reviews/hads yet.

    Cheers, NBSers!

This beer isn't officially released until Tuesday. But I tried the delightful Kelsen Brewing Spacetown Pale Ale at the brewery in Derry, NH. 5.5% ABV. Good caramel malt and hop balance. I think people will like this when it becomes available.

Howdy, all; and a Happy Mother's Day to the moms out there, and cheers to the new trustees of the thread!

Great weather out here on Long Island, breezy and mid-temps, neither too humid nor arid. The wife and I made our obligatory calls to our moms and now its time for the Cuvée Noire I have for today...
    [IMG] [IMG]
Listed as retired here on BA, and with a different abv, so perhaps this is a new incarnation of the ale.
Label above says, "Belgian Style Stout With Sweet Orange Peel, Aged In Bourbon Barrels." 10.6% abv.
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Into da snifter, kicked up a big fat fluffy head as well as aromas of dark fruit, bourbon, and orange peel...
Flavors followed nose, but the body was too thin for my tastes. In an ale that looks like that, I prefer a little more meat on the bones, so to speak. But, that said, worth the buy and try if you can spare what must've been about $20, and enjoy BSDAs, bourbon barrel aged ales, and orange peel.

    Peace!

Hooray!! It's time for a new beer this Sunday! Lots of goodies.. oh what to do?? What to choose?

It seemed like this would be appropriate, even for a hot day but sort of new starts, and a new anniversary and beginnings so let's dive in.

My new beer for Sunday today is:

    Sucre - The Bruery

linked review here or just read below

The Bruery - Sucré 2014 Anniversary
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5 | Final score 4.39

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

An interesting muddy reddish brown, quite murky looking a bit but quite a unique looking color here. Comes out of the bottle quite wet and slapping somewhat. Head is light tan and minimal retention, but leaves a creamy vanilla yellow collar. Slick top, a bit oil stained and glossy.

Nice mellow nose and what I expect from this series. Cherry fruit, more sense of booze and heat coming out like kirsch a bit. and hints of that classic salt caramel. This seems a little hotter than past anniversary items but still real nice.

Palate comes with huge flavors of dark and red fruits. Cherry, fig working in the mix there with some nice warmth. Big purple grape sensing juicy flavors. Not overly out of control on the palate, but a little wet for barrel aging and some noticeable tingle carbonation on first sip. It is however carrying and coating the flavors wonderfully. Big slow sipper and only feels warm long after it's gone, not a big boozy blast in the palate.

Overall may not be as memorable as previous anniversary editions, definitely fruit forward more, and missing some depth and the large caramel butterscotch I seem to remember on the last one, but still quite enjoyable to be drinking. Never get tired of these anniversary beers from the Bruery.

    -------------------------

Quite a fun brew to be having, I really look forward to these solera method beers from The Bruery. Great to be seeing @cavedave and @utopiajane taking on the reigns as well. Here's to new things, and keeping old traditions alive. Fun times. Hope to make it for next NBS and for other beer friends to join in.

    Cheers!

My first post on NBS. I'm a bit tech-challenged, so no photos or youtube links- but if I could link a band, it would be the Strypes. Those kids can retro rock, and are worthy of a New B(and) Sunday shout out.

My new beer for today is Prairie Coffee Noir Imperial Stout. Big bitter roasted coffee up front and throughout, with some chocolate, oak and whiskey notes appearing as the beer warms. A sipper for sure at 11.5%. Was a bit worried about trying this one, since the reviews were all over the map. But I side with those who like. A big beer for sure.

Cheers, and happy Mother's Day to all!

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,

Great job getting us underway, Cavedave! Thanks for answering the call and keeping this thing going!

56 degrees and partly sunny in the capital of Spokanistan. Today, I went local - really local. How local? About ten minutes walk from where I live. Yesterday I had a grunt (wow, that sounds like something completely different) filled with River City's IPA at their tasting room. I decided to bust it out to accompany today's lunch.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34277/120836/?ba=woemad

A decent, sessionable IPA rather than a flavor bomb, and pretty reasonable for what I paid for it.

Happy Mom's Day to all the dedicated ladies. Only been an official BA member since Jan., but have been reading for a couple years and always enjoy @cavedave stuff. Anyway, after more self imposed yard work, my back hurts like hell. Therefore,

    [IMG] [IMG]
If I hadn't read the label I would say it was a pilsner. Looks, smells, and pretty much taste like one. Can really smell and taste the malt grain. Smells a little adjunct like- close to a Miller Lite. Taste a lot better. A little tart with a slightly hoppy bitter finish. Good solid lager throughout. Always try to be objective, but sitting on the deck in beautiful weather after a few hours of resetting fence posts makes it tough. Will review later, for now I am going to give it a 3.50.

While admittedly I let this get too cold, it's still a mess.
As I described this in WBAYD thread, it tastes like sweet dust. Like if you swept up your garage floor after dumping some sugar on the floor, sweeping it up and dumping it in an old flat beer.
I may give it another sip or two but otherwise, blah!

My first time trying this one - for kicks, I shared this with non-beer drinkers. As a result, this was almost universally hated. :slight_frown: But it had the side effect of me killing 90% of the bottle myself. And I would think about killing TWO bottles of this, it's that incredible.

    New American IPA Sunday.

Greetings from a beautiful Spring day here at the Jersey Shore. Mothers deserve days like today; about 80 pleasant sunny degrees. It's just perfect outside around here today.
Today included an early round of (good!) golf, a ride in the convertible with, who else, my wife, then some light chores in honor of her as a 'Mom'. The steaks hit the grill after I finish this ditty.
During the chores, I reached for this new brew: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/139/80735/?ba=NiceTaps
