Happy Mother's Day to those of you privileged enough to be moms. Glad to join in on the New Beer Sunday with the new hosts. Thanks guys. I was very happy to get a couple of these and a few other Cigar City beers. Quite enjoyed this one. Like how it looks, love how it smells. I got Grapefruit/citrus, grass, a little pine and a hint of floral and a little sweet (maybe caramel) in the background. Taste was a hit of bitter pine, then tropical fruit/citrus and a hint of sweet malt followed by a lingering resinous pine flavor on the tongue. As it warmed, just a hint of warming alcohol as it passed over the tongue. Good stuff.

Well I don't have to work tomorrow, or the entire week, so I can have another, right? :grinning:
Blakkr is a colab beer between Surly, Three Floyds, and Real Ale. I have the Surly version and it is what I imagine a light, coffee roasty malt black ale that is very hoppy to taste like. I get plenty of the coffee flavors from the malts, some sweet caramel, molasses, even a bit of sweet cream. It is quite bitter and earthy from the hops. After 16oz I will know I drank it.

I lucked out to try this on cask a few days ago with the Savor events going on in DC, really dug it!

Greetings NBS'ers and are new MC @cavedave and co-host @utopiajane,

Enjoyed a beautiful Mothers Day with family on a partly cloudy, somewhat humid day in the midwest. Should have read Rios post before firing up the grill because that same weather passed through Arlington heights around 5:30. With all the food prepped I had no choice but to grab the umbrella and get r done. Well it is to dark and wet to actually tend to the lawn but I have heard some good buzz on this evenings NBS Candidate, so its time to belly up to the bar for Baderbrau's Lawnmower Beer.

Center pour into a pilsner glass, color is pale yellow with an abundant head that leaves behind a nice lace. Aromas of citrus, grass and bready malt. Taste is crisp, a little lemon/grapefruit bitterness and a creamy malt character. Medium body with light carbonation, oily finish with some floral notes. A good take on the IPL style and a pretty decent no nonsense beer. And @ 5.5% abv. I cant wait for some hot days and a lawn to cut. I have enjoyed both new styles from baderbrau enough that I might have to go and hit up the original.

Hope you all had a good Mothers Day and have a good week as well, Cheers

Poured from 12oz. bottle kept overnight in fridge to a KBS snifter. Its appearance is a stout lover’s dream – pours the darkest black with an apparent thickness in its body that you know to fit this style well. Halfway through the pour, thousands of bubbles start a an carbonated explosion that culminates in the birth of a heavy, two inch tall head that looks like the crema in a finely crafted espresso – aromas of chocolate and bourbon invade the air around the glass as the head forms. Ultimately the short-lived foamy head sinks into the absorbing darkness of the beer below, leaving an elegant ring to remind you of its once majestic existence.

Its aromas boast dark dried fruit that brink back plum & rum-soaked raisins, medium roast espresso coffee (although not as much as expected), chocolate ice cream , sweet bourbon, molasses with faint notes of oak. Upon taking the first few sips my immediate impression is obvious, KBS’ taste mimics its aroma. After savoring the first few sips and soaking my palate I can tell that its taste stronger in the coffee & chocolate than its nose, the coffee tasting more dark roast and the chocolate tasting like cacao. Bourbon There are also vanilla notes which complement its coffee and chocolate forwardness very well. The oaky bourbon presence, both in its warming heat and taste, surrounds the vast array of flavors and seems to aid well their transition. There is a warm yet mildly bitter finish to the beer which I consider very inviting. Its mouthfeel is great although from the appearance of the pour I imagined it to be slightly more viscous and chewy – which I believe would make its flavor profile even more enjoyable.

Overall – in this BA’s humble opinion - KBS definitely lives up to the hype. I wouldn’t say its my all-time favorite, but I would happily trade for it again or go out of my way to get it when travelling.

    Score: 4.69

    PS - this was Untappd 500th Unique Check-In

    Cheers BA!!

Greetings NBS! I missed out last week, not that I wasn't trying new beers, I was just on vacation in Florida and didn't find the time to get on this fine thread we have here. Today's first new brew was Goose Island's The Illinois DIPA. 'Twas a fine, refreshing and citrusy DIPA that paired well with a spicy dinner.

Post dinner, I moved on to a new offering from Lazy Magnolia. Song of the South Berliner Weisse. After a humid day here in LA, this hit the spot on my balcony. Quite refreshing, with a subtle, yet present lip-puckering tartness. A go-to sour? No. However, this is worth trying for a light, refreshing and flavorful brew:

Time for a nightcap and to prepare for the week, cheers NBS!

Thanks for taking over, CaveDave and Utopia! I would like to contribute more consistently, but this transitional week seemed to be a reason to make a concerted effort. Warm and muggy all afternoon in NE Florida, then Mother Nature unleashed one hell of a thunderstorm! Grilled under the patio roof, because when wife says steak for Mother's Day, it's steak for Mother's Day. Tongs in one hand, hefe in the other - good times.

Back with another new beer. This one's a barleywine from Deschutes.

A fairly fruity take on a barleywine. Interesting, but the flavors don't quite meld together. I'd be intruigued to taste what it would be like with a few years on it.

Hello All NBSer's (and Matt, hope you're peeking in),
Beautiful day here in SoCal, breezy with bright sun and a few scattered clouds. Windchimes were a constant lullaby. But it's warming up, andd we'll be at a 100 by Tuesday...BOO!!!

Well, I went for a Bruery offering that is pretty limited in numbers released.

I think I set my expectations too high for this one because in my mind I was thinking it would be close to its cousin Filmishmish--which is stunning. Mischmishmish is no Filmishmish, but it's pretty good, except for the nose...which is amazing! You can smell so much apricot that you feel like you got some apricot juice left on your lips after eating one.

So if you are into sours (even ones that are slightly sour) I recommend seeking Mischmishmish out, but don't build it up in your mind to be something it's not...this one is more on the subtle side.

Can totally relate to that. Have had some beers I could smell all night long, but once i tasted them the they could'nt follow the nose. Maybe Toucan Sam had it right after all.
    Cheers
