I completed my first year as a PhD student this morning and it's time to celebrate!

Last year, I attended the orientation for the program. I arrived early and was a bit nervous. I killed some time browsing the beer selection at a the nearby Whole Foods. Being a Rhode Islander I have little experience with beer being sold in grocery stores. In any event, I saw a four pack of Old Rasputin. I decided at that moment that I was going to buy the four pack and drink one bottle every year of my program. I thought it'd be interesting to see how the beer changed after one, two, three and four years. While most would warn that my program is going to take five years, I have organized my life in every way I can to complete this bad boy in four years. Thus, the Old Rasputin would serve as a reminder that this thing needed to be done in four!

I finished year one of four this morning. As a result, I am getting after bottle #1. I can't believe I finished this first year.

Anyways, bottoms up folks and wish me well in year two (which thankfully doesn't start until September)!

    Salute!

Congratulations are in order! What's your field? I'd raise a glass of Ol' Raspy to you if I were at home, but here's this:

    Thanks!

My field is social work. My practice experience and research interests are in issues related to prisoner re-entry. Specifically, I am concerned with issues that formerly incarcerated men and women face when they try to obtain employment post-incarceration. My concerns lie with the level of job readiness programming they receive while still in prison.

This is a sensitive and controversial issue, so I'll leave it at that. If you or anyone else is interested in my work or have any information you'd like to share, please send me a private message.

Thanks again for the congratulations and enjoy that trippel! I've got to say, even though I've strayed away from the Belgian brews these days, that looks like a tasty beer.

Congratulations! That is actually a very interesting topic that you chose. The US prison system, being for profit, doesn't want to spend money to rehab and especially to prepare people who "paid their debt to society" to get back into society. Reforms are needed at more fundamental levels, that's my personal opinion, but for a lengthy discussion elsewhere.

On the vein of milestone, we found out that our 2nd will be a boy as well. To appropriately celebrate the um...great occasion... :grinning: . My thanks to my awesome trade partner @trentbrown89 for hooking me up with one a while back.

Congratulations to all! I'm about to start grad school this September and I really like that idea. It's only a 2 year program, so maybe I'll drink one every semester. I was also thinking about just buying a bomber of something nice when I start and drinking it when I graduate.

Congrats! I bet you are wonderful at this once you get the credentials behind you to allow entry into the workforce. Important work that few have the smarts or guts to do is my take on it. Cheers!

Thanks Dave! I was sorta hoping for a girl, but when it came down to it, another boy is just as awesome. Our first is such an amazing gift to our lives and we hope for the same with this one as well.

Thanks my man, I appreciate it! I have had some solid success with this in Providence already, now it's a matter of replicating it, which is a whole other ball game....

Oh and as I decided between Mayflower Porter and Hoponius Union I crank the volume on the only song capable of capturing the emotion today:

    Great thinking and great post!
How will you know if it's the beer or you that has been changing each year?
