For our graduation, my tasting group and I did a blind tasting of a few BA Stouts I have been saving for a special occasion. We rated the beers in order 1-6 from favorite to least favorite and compiled the scores. The lower the score the better the rating (like golf). We all had the same beer for our first choice and for our last choice. We were all pretty sure the BA Yeti was infected though :slight_frown:. It was an awesome time with some interesting results so I figured I would share.

    The Results:

    Bourbon County Rare - 5
    Bourbon County Stout 2011 - 14
    BB Plead the 5th - 15
    KBS 2011 - 18
BA Old Rasputin XIV - 23
    BA Yeti 2011 - 30

    The individual breakdowns 1-6:
Rare, BCBS, KBS, BB Plead, BA Old Raspy, BA Yeti
Rare, BB Plead, BCBS, BA Old Raspy, KBS, BA Yeti
Rare, BB Plead, BCBS, KBS, BA Old Raspy, BA Yeti
Rare, BB Plead, BCBS, KBS, Ba Old Raspy, BA Yeti
Rare, KBS, BCBS, BA Old Raspy, BB Plead, BA Yeti

    Cheers!

    I don't beleive you.

You should send me a bottle of each to verify your results.

On a seperate note, I use a very similar ranking system when I do blind tastings, and unanamous favorites are pretty rare. That shows how good the BC Rare must be ( I have never had it)

The only one we have judged was Beamish (over Guiness and Murphy's), and we have done 19 different categories.

That sucks about the BA Yeti, I opened one at DLD and it was great. Uninfected it would have placed in your top 3.

Did you have a non-taster do the pours (I assume so, but I've seen it not done this way)? I love having it done that way, there is truly no way of knowing which is which then by any of the tasters.

Yea it did suck ... smelled like the worst burnt pot of coffee I have ever smelled mixed with vinegar.

Yep, my buddy's roommate poured the beers for us so none of us had a clue of what beer was which. Made it much more fun for all involved in the actual tasting. The roommate is more of a tequila fan than a beer fan so, there were no hard feelings in not being involved.

Perfect. That's the way to do it! Nice results, I rated [draft] BB Plead on here higher than Rare although I never had them side-by-side for a true "comparison." Would be interesting to do this with said beers you had. Thanks for sharing.

To be honest, I was pretty surprised also. I had heard Rare was good, but it absolutely blew us all away compared to the other ones. All amazing beers (sans Yeti), but I guess the true winner emerged in this match-up.

I'm not surpised that Rare ranked so highly, especially next to the others you had. Yeti probably would've been in the top 3 if it wasn't a bad bottle.

Yup, that seems about right. A BCBS '08 or '09 would have been better than the '11, though, I think those would have a chance against the Rare (while fresh BCBS just doesn't).

The night was a bit hazy, so you'll have to forgive me for the lack of details about why, but I distinctly remember preferring the '11 BCBS to all of the older vintages when we did a vertical tasting back around Christmas time.

That said, I don't really think any of them compete with Rare.

It would definitely be interesting to put an older vintage BCBS against Rare. I had never had any BCBS before this tasting, so I can not definitively say from experience if I would like older vintages more.

I'm disappointed that Rare scored so well. I would have loved to read that "Totally obtainable beer X was the best of the bunch."

Sometimes beer lives up to the hype. Rare is freaking amazing.

The results make perfect sense to me. That's how I'd rank them. I wish more people would do this so they'd realize how boring BA Old Rasputin is.

Completely agree; compared to the others BA Old Rasputin was quite lackluster. I would venture to say that it may have taken the 6 spot if BA Yeti was not infected.

It really is too bad you got an infected BA Yeti. I was amazed by how good that beer was. The mouthfeel was creamy in the best way possible and I've had the worst hankering for it since then, but I've been worried to pull the trigger on another trade with all the reports of randomly infected bottles.

That said I had Rare for the first time two weeks ago to celebrate my brother's graduation and it truly was the best BA stout I've ever had. I'm glad we had it last or I think all the other beers we opened that night would have shown in a poorer light.

given how delicious BA old raspy is (the last place, non-infected beer), i'm guessing that was a very happy tasting.

edit: haha, see i got in after some raspy bashing. i love that beer, but i agree with its placement behind, say, normal BCBS, and the price--ouch. still, very tasty.

Sorry about the bad BA Yeti. Nevertheless, thank you for posting those results.

Yes, we were all very happy with the lineup. There were not any necessarily "bad" beers that we tried that were not infected. I do think that on any given day the BB Plead might take down the 2011 BCBS though. I would not turn away any of these beers if I had a chance to taste them again, all world class brews. That being said, I would love to try an un-infected BA Yeti. I was leaning towards not adding it to the tasting due to the reports of infected bottles and replacing it with a BA Boris or Older Viscosity, but I figured it was worth the gamble. I guess I lost.
