I found a local wine shop that has 5 bottles of this. I see varying reviews for this and was curious if when I pick this "classic"(depending on opinion) up should I let it age or drink it as is?

I like it best with 2-3 yrs on it. So pick up a couple and enjoy 1 over the Christmas holidays for the next few years. Guessing it's the 2013 bottling, very rarely see any aged in the stores..

Have one now and age the others. It is a lovely beer.

It mellows a little over time, but I like it year to year as well. Concur with most on the board here, pick up a couple and try one this year and another later on.

I had a 2009 bottle in 2011. It was amazing.

I just saw it in their inventory online have not made it into the store as of yet so not sure on the year. Will go on Monday as liquor stores in Indy are closed on Sunday.

I had a fresh bottle a few months ago, it was very good but sweet and boozy. I wish I would have bought a second bottle to put away for a while.

Definitely let it age for at least 2-3 years.

As a general rule, try the beer before you go about aging it.

Probably the worst beer I've had in my life.

Was fortunate to be invited to a Samichlaus vertical in Vegas a few years back. It was wonderful. I remember the first time I tried this beer: not good to say the least but now I seek out a bottle every year. Have an "empty vertical" going now of this.

I'll start with saying, in no way is this beer a traditional doppelbock. Also if you are the type of person that thinks a beer that is 14% ABV shouldn't be hot when fresh, don't drink this beer with less than 2-3 years of age on it. Personally I like the beer. Most people who do not complain that the beer is too boozy but considering the strength, it is almost impossible to hide the ABV when fresh. So if you are sensitive to high ABV beers, age it. If not, try one fresh then decide whether or not you would like to age one.

Age it. It's sublime with 10 years on it.

Agreed. I tried it based on the reviews and posts on this site. I couldn't even drink half of the bottle.

Had one with six years on it and it was magical. Buy a 4 pk and drink one each Christmas...it's wonderful

This is an absolute favorite of mine. My local store randomly got a bunch of 2009s in last year. They are aging at my place now!

I bought a pack a few years ago.... and then put a sticker on it "do not open before 2017".
I have faith that it will be worth the occupied pantry closet real estate space by then.......

I let a couple stores age it for me, I freaking love this beer with about 4 years on it
