Been trying to get the wife into craft beer, starting from a point of hating all alcohol in general. Miserable failure until tonight: Duchesse de Bourgogne. Unexpected, though not utterly shocking. Sours may be a shock for those accustomed to macros or even most craft, but as a starting point for all beer, it seems to have been a success!

Actually that was one of my lady's first loves too, along with Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge. They are both nice and tangy, but also rather sweet, and taste almost nothing like what many people consider "beer".

Sounds like Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge is up next! Thanks!

Thanks! I think I'll give it a try. I had pretty much given up since all mine will drink is Ultra.

I have noticed how much lady's tend to enjoy sours more than other styles.

It makes sense though most of them are lighter and while some can be very sour most drinking age adults are more accustomed to sourness than bitterness. Also, the fact that many sours share certain characteristics with wine, even for guys who don't drink beer, its not a large leap to make.

It is an expensive habit though just be aware of that.

Edit: Another sour style to try would be Brett beers different sort of sour but along the same lines.

Mine hates beer all together. It's a lost cause.

ha, my husband is finally getting into craft beer. you know what did it for him?
    rodenbach (especially the grand cru).
I don't care what he's into... I'm just tickled pink that he wants to get a growler every weekend!
*that being said, he's still not allowed in my beer fridge*

Heady Topper got my girlfriend to enjoy beers that aren't fruity or wheaty. In fact, HT turned my girlfriend into somewhat of a beer snob.

My wife also loves sours and saisons. And "good stouts".

Well you set the bar pretty high (from what I've heard anyway, having never tried it)

Rodenbach was a breakthrough for my wife, so same idea. Beer that's close to wine = easier transition for some.

On the flip side, she freaking loves stouts - so maybe the key is to just not feed the SO IPAs all day long. ;D

My wife is the same with "good stouts". She doesn't care much for the everyday stouts, but loves BA and Imperial stouts. The first big stout that she really liked was Deschutes Abyss. She's been an IPA lover for years, and will pretty much try any beer at least once.

Congrats, your wife likes one of the most expensive styles.

Mine thinks all sours taste like vomit. On the other hand, she actually likes parabola, bcbcs, bcbs and such. Nah, it's cool...not like they are limited and cheap

Big barrel aged stouts are my wife's preference as well. She's still got the IPA training wheels on. Most she hates, but I find that she likes the overly citrus-y ones.

The best part for me is that my girlfriend hates sours and doesn't really like stouts, even barrel aged. So it's IPAs and anything else that doesn't taste like smoke for her.

My wife has an appreciation for all good beer at this point. Heady Topper was a groundbreaking experience for her.
