    I don't spend a lot of time talking about beer with others (my friends like it, but aren't into it), so I never really learn the pronunciations of different beers and breweries. This is especially problematic with Belgian beers (which are my favorite). I figured it might be helpful for BA's to share proper pronunciations to avoid confusion in the future.

    An easy example: Trappiste. Would that be Trap-ist or Trapp-eest? I've been pronouncing it Trap-ist but I'd like to hide my ignorance whenever possible :wink:

    Funny because even after about 10 years of being "into" beer, I still guess how to pronounce a lot of breweries for the same reason. I don't know if I can properly describe the anxiety I feel when trying to ask a beer store if they have something from Deschutes.

    God help me if I ever have to order Westvleteren. No idea how to say that.

    I'm pretty sure I butcher Weihenstephaner whenever I say it, too.

    I know a guy who is annoyingly anal about the "correct" pronunciations of a certain beer style or brewery. Dude swears the correct way to pronounce a Imperial/Double IPA is "DEEP"-A, not "DIP"-A. I think he's wrong and that just sounds ridiculous. He get's bent out of shape if you pronounce it differently and will correct you. It's horrible.

    There's a great guy at one of my favorite shops who always pronounces the beers I ask for differently than I do. I've become a little self-conscious about. Recently found myself going on youtube to watch beer reviews in order to hear how people are pronouncing the names of beers. I laughed when I realized that I was right and he was wrong on a couple of them lol.

    I'd venture to guess that in Belgium this varies between the French an Flemish (Dutch) speaking parts of the country.

    The Flemish speaking parts would likely say TRAHP-ist. I'm not familiar with French so I don't want to speak for that portion of the country.

    As for other Belgian breweries and whatnot:
    Westvleteren = vest-flay-ter-uh
    Brouwerij = brau-er-eye
    oude geuze = ow-duh gew-zuh (this is a very liberal approximation that should get your point across in English speaking areas)
    Drie Fonteinen = dree fon-tine-uh
    De Struise = duh strau-zuh
    Westmalle = vest-mall-uh

    I was at The Lost Abbey in San Marcos in January and I bought a few bottles of Cuvee De Tomme and I pronounced it "Cuvee De Tome" and was corrected that it should be "Tommy" not "Tome". I felt like a dumb ass.

    Okay, based on my extremely limited knowledge of French, the pronunciation "Tommy" there makes little to no sense. I would have said "koo-vay duh tohm" just like you.

    I've heard Gueuze said "gar - zuh". I pronounce Cantillon "cant-i-yon" but I'm not sure if that's correct.

    That's what I'd call it too. This guy though, swears it called a DEEP-A. Said that is how Michael Jackson or some other beer guru said it was pronounced. I don't know where he got that info from, but it infuriates me for some reason. Haha.

    Here are some more for you all:

    La Trappe = luh trahp
    Bierbrouwerij de Koningshoeven = beer-brau-er-eye duh cone-ings-hoo-vuh
    De Molen = duh mole-uh
    Hel & Verdoemenis = hell en fer-doom-uh-niss
    Hemel & Aarde = hey-mull en arr-duh
    Mooi & Meedogenloos = moy en may-doh-gen-lohs (again a rough interpretation, since 'hard g' doesn't exist in Dutch)
    Brouwerij 't IJ = brau-er-eye uht eye

    I think your pronunciation of Cantillon is spot-on, based on how the brewer pronounces his brewery's name in the first 20 sec of this video.
