Was drinking the usual this afternoon (last bottle of Investigative Shutdown,Vitus and Dirtwolf.Had gotten a bottle of Great Lakes Eye of the Tiger and was shocked as to how good this beer was.DDDEEElicious.I love Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye but due to the drought out west they have not been distributing much to the east. Now I am glad they have a suitable replacement although it tastes altogether different.Personally like this better than Stone IPA. Maybe you guys could make some suggestion's on rye beers.

Sour in the Rye does it for me. Also Saison Rue.

Founders Red's Rye and Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye are my favorites in the IPA style of rye beers.

I agree with the OP's two choices: Rye of the Tiger and Hop Rod Rye. (BTW, now I know why we haven't seen any Bear Republic stuff in these parts lately. Thanks for the info.)

Also need to mention Harpoon's Rich & Dan's RIPA.

Rye of the Tiger is amazing, but isn't Sucks also brewed with a decent amount of Rye? Sucks is probably a little, little bit better than Rye of the Tiger, but it's very close. Both really awesome IPAs.

SN 'Ruthless Rye IPA' is excellent.

Yup, Sucks uses Rye, Wheat, and a few other grains.

OP, it sounds to me like you mean "Best Rye IPA", a style in which you barely taste the rye at all. I'd imagine your favorite Rye-I will have a similar hop bill as your favorite IPA/DIPA.

My favorite Rye IPA's are Founders Red's Rye, Green Flash Hop Head Red, and Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye. As you can see, I like hoppy reds- love the caramel malts. IMO the rye adds a little more body, a little bit of cleanness to the finish and a definite clovey-spice (not too far from wheat), but still, not too much of an impact on the overall flavor. In all three of these, the flavor of caramel malts dominate the flavor of the rye malt, with hops being the first and most up-front flavor.

Haven't had many rye beers outside of rye-ipas, but I have enjoyed those I've had. Boulevard's Westside Rye was interesting and had minimal distractions from the rye.

Like I said before, not too far from the flavors of a "straight" wheat beer. Richer and very little banana-y flavor, mostly clovey peppery spice. Very grainy.

I'm also a huge fan of Boulevard's Rye-on-Rye, but IMO BBA beers are entirely different beasts.

Wookey Jack by Firestone Walker - shared one last night with some friends and it was an all around hit. Blended the best elements of a dark rye brew with an IPA.

Terrapin rye pale is pretty solid. I wasn't a big fan of ruthless rye. Anyone know why it is that most rye beers are IPAs or black ales?

And you my friend are absolutely right. Up until a year ago I would not touch an ipa and now I can't drink anything but ipa's or something that tastes like one.Once in a while I will have a straight wheat beer(favorite being Vitus) but you analyzed it very correctly. Crazy as it sounds while I love Dirtwolf and Chillwave, Rye of the Tiger just became my new favorite.

I love IPAs, but I can definitely taste the rye in Sucks and Rye of the Tiger. I remember when I had my first Sucks, which was a year or so after I had tried Rye of the Tiger, and I thought, "Huh, this is awesome, is there rye in there?" and sure enough there was (thanks for backing up my hazy memory). I don't think I've ever had a Founders Red Rye fresh though, so maybe I'll have to give it another chance. The four I had last year were not great, but they were old.

Rye of the Tiger is definitely a damn good IPA. The rye element of an already great IPA can really turn the tables. One of these days I would LOVE to get my hands on a bottle of Rye on Rye. That sounds amazing.

Drinking a 6-point Righteous Ale when I saw this thread. Its a pretty good rye, although lately I have really loved Green Flash Road Warrior. I second many of the things already said here. Love IPAs, but a good Rye beer now and then is fantastic. Also like Ruthless and Founders when they are available. Love Racer 5, but it is only an out of state treat for me in CT.
